Hello everyone! I was banded on 5/25/2010 and I have been on my liquid diet. Everything has been alright but when it comes to getting Protein into my diet it becomes a problem. I have tried taking medifast shakes, sugar-free carnation instant Breakfast, sugar free muscle milk, this jello-like sugar free concoction (42g Protein per shot) & unflavored whey protein. After a few sips my stomach seems to blow up and I get extremely uncomfortable. In order to get some protein, I've been pureeing egg whites and putting it broth-I've tolerated this very well. Has anybody had a problem with Protein Shakes?

Also, do many of you include Protein Shakes in your diet after the first couple weeks after surgery?

Any info would be greatly appreciated!

-Angela

I think you should try to take Gas-X with the Protein for a while. It takes time for your stomach to get used to having something foreign around it. I have been taking Gas-X with some meals just because I have a similar issue. I was banded 5/18. From what I understand this will all get better.....

I was banded on 5/27 and on a clear liquid diet for 7 days. Isopure in the Grape flavor has been a lifesaver - freeze until slushy or put in a cup half full of ice chips and Water - so you are diluting it. One bottle is the size of a regular soda bottle and has 40 grams of Protein - I sip it all day and it is so helpful...

I agree with the Isopure grape frost post. I mix in lemonade with it to give it a better taste.

I've heard that many people have problems with Protein shakes. Are you lactose intolerant? That causes a problem with many Protein Shakes. whey isolate is one with no lactose. Jay Robb has an egg white Protein shake you might try.

Since I've goten back on solids- I don't do Protein shakes at all except for when I'm on liquids only after a fill. My doctor's office recommends no liquid calories, and except for the occasional glass of wine or beer- I comply with that! Many, many people do use the shakes however to ensure that they get enough protein. My band is loose enough that I get enough protein with regular food.

I was banded 3/18/10, and have found I'm tight in the mornings and the Protein Drinks are a lifesaver. In fact, I've found that the days I use it are days that I don't have food cravings later in the day.

The first 2 weeks after surgery I couldn't stomach it. It's much better now.

I'm about 4 weeks out, and going in for my first fill tomorrow. I still take the Protein Shakes in the morning, and really enjoy them, which surprises me after the liquid phase. I vowed to never have another shake again because I was so sick of them! But then once I was on solids, I found myself craving the shake in the morning. I started using the Pure Protein shakes, and absolutley love them. They have 25g of Protein and only 2 carbs. The Cookies & Cream one is great, but I do like all the flavors, and it is not heavy or griddy at all...I have texture issues, and this one gives me no problems...just my opinion, but maybe worth a shot! Good luck in your journey.

When you are allowed them eggbeaters with cheese and greek style yogurt are both high in Protein, low in carbs and low in calories. I used to mix unflavored Protein Powder in while making Cream of Wheat. I would sweeten it with Splenda. This, too, is an alternative to the shakes. You can still do the shakes just gradually introduce one item listed above at a time and only when your doctor tells you that you can. My doctor allowed some of these items about 10 days out. Best wishes on your journey!

I was very nauseated for the first 10 days after surgery, so I didn't stress out about Protein until I started mushies. At that point, my Dr. recommended 40g a day until it was time to start solid food, at which time he recommended 100g of Protein a day.

Good luck to you!

The SAME thing happened to me, thought i was dying. I think what we need to do is buy the pre made shakes (boost, ensure) so we dont drink the whole thing. My Protein powder will make 125ml of milk into 300ml drink. and its way too much to drink. try buying the pre made shakes that are small

I agree with the poster that asked about lactose intolerance. I am lactose intolerant (especially milk) so I use soy milk. I am unable to eat food in the morning so I use half soy milk, half Water with my scoop of chocolate Muscle Milk. I love it! And I use the lactose free Protein powder so-- no lactose problems. My doctor wants me to eat solid foods for the most part, but doesn't give me grief about having a Protein Drink for Breakfast.

All the best to you on your journey.

Banded 4/29 just got my first fill and I agree, I am tight in the mornings. I get hungry when I don't drink my shake in the morning and I have issues eating the rest of the day.

I'm about 5 months post-op and I still make my shakes. Like someone else mentioned, the morning's can be a bit tight & difficult, so Protein shakes are my best bet. However, I do use lactose free skim plus milk. If you're sensitive to lactose, skim plus is a good option, plus it has more Protein than regular skim milk.

Best,

Lauren

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
