I took a bite of baked Beans last night and it was super spicy! My mouth was burning, even from a tiny bite. Before surgery, I would have had a big drink of milk, but I can't drink while eating now--or for 60 mins afterwards.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what to do when this happens? I definitely ask first, but my definition of spicy is obviously lower than some other peoples'.

Thanks,

Mary

I love hot food.

I douse my hot wings with bleu cheese salad dressing.

With other spicy foods, I just grin and bear it.

You don't necessarily have to "drink" milk. It doesn't hurt to take a "sip" and swish it around in your mouth to soothe the pain.

My understanding of not being able to drink is that you dont want the food in your pouch to bloat and stretch your pouch. I would think if you really enjoy hot food, you can have a couple of small sips, but eat less than you normally would. See what your Dr thinks!

Thanks! I didn't even think of that, but I'm sure it will be better than just sitting there with a burning mouth for an hour.

I vote for the small sips route. That's what I would have done. Taking a few sips to get rid of the spicy is different than downing a pint of something while you're eating a meal.

Thanks everyone! At least I have some options now. I was afraid I would just have to give up on spicy foods all together.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
