Severe Port Pain When Standing or Walking

Recommended Posts

I was banded almost 2 weeks ago. This afternoon I started having pretty severe port area pain when I stand and try to walk. It has started to get allot worse. So I called my doctor at 8pm and he said that it was definitely the port and I probably bumped or hit it. He said he can see me tomorrow afternoon after all his surgeries or I can wait until Friday morning. The only thing he said I can do right now is rest and apply ice packs and the liquid Loratab he prescribed for surgery pain. It freakin hurts like hell when I try to stand.

Has this happened to anyone else?

I will agree with that, that the pain is due to bumping your port. I know I have bumped my port and didn't even realize I had done it until it starts to hurt...like a bad bruise. The dog ran up me while I was laying in my recliner and stood on my port, that hurt real bad..like someone punched me in the port, now that it's been a couple of days it just feels like a bruise. I was banded in 2007, and had my port and tubing replaced last year in July. My port was leaking. I would just let your doctor know when you see them, just so they can poke around and make sure that is all it is.

My port area was the last to heal . I have hit it and yeah it can hurt. Mine is right under the surface and real easy to find and bump into. 2 weeks post op i still had some discomfort and swelling . Took me 4 weeks to be myself again. Going in for 2nd fill today , have some restriction but need more and need to remember to drink my Water. Keep moving forward.

I am feeling 100% better than last week this time. While I was at the doctors last week he poked around the port area. I woke up the next morning and twisted the get the remote control and felt like someone snapped me in the belly with a rubber band. After that I started feeling SO much better. I am thinking it was scar tissue and it released from right under my skin.

Thank you for your responses.

I'm the right height to bump mine on the kitchen counter, and shopping carts. So I'm always bumping mine and not realizing that I have done it unless I hit really hard. I feel bruised for days sometimes you can even see the bruise. I had that popping feeling once when I started doing sit ups and ab exercises, when I told my doctor he about had a fit. He told me NO more ab exercises. He never told me what the pop feeling was though. Just take it easy if you feel like it hurts. I mean you don't want to be like that saying 1 step forward and 2 steps back...you don't want that.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
