AGGHH!! How much "mushy" could you eat?

Recommended Posts

I just started mushies a few days ago, and man can I eat!!! Small mashed potatoes AND small mac and cheese from KFC......no problem! I know people say that before the first fill some people feel little to no restriction. So, here's the deal......I don't want to eat potatos and/or mac and cheese every day because I'll quickly regain everything I've lost so far. (I'm down 25 pounds in three weeks.) My question is, approximately how much did you eat in one sitting and how many times per day did you eat on mushies?? If I eat scrambled eggs for Breakfast (2 whites, one yolk), cream of wheat with a splash of milk for lunch and refried Beans with cheese and some applesauce for dinner does that sound like an appropriate amount?

We went to a deli for dinner tonight. I ordered a baked spud with butter/sour cream/cheese and mashed it up really good with my fork. I stopped myself half way through (it was huge!) but I could have packed it all away easily. Ugh....I don't want to overdo it here. Please help me know what a "portion" looks like in this mushy stage! Thanks!!!!!!

B-

If you choose lower fat things and avoid stuff like cheese, butter and sour cream it wont matter so much anyway how much you can fit it. It's really easy to way overdo the calories eating a baked potato with butter and sour cream - not so easy if its pureed apples.

All the literature I've been given suggests fruit, vegetables and lean meat cooked into meals and pureed rather than high fat or sweet stand ins such as macaroni cheese, rice pudding and the like.

Although it must be hard when you're eating out. You cant really ask a restaurant to blend your meal for you can you?

Clementine, I am so jealous!!! I am 2 weeks out of surgery, and I can still barely get enough food down. I am definitely getting more down than I did a week ago, but I can still only eat about 3-4 ounces per meal, and right now I am only eating about 2 times a day (3 if I am really doing good). I make 4 ounces, but I feel as if I will burst if I try to consume it all. It has been tough, because I am sure that I should be getting more nutrition, but it just will not fit. I have my post- op tomorrow so I'll ask the doc about it. I am due for my first fill in 2 weeks, but if I keep going at the rate that I am currently going, I will have to cancel it. I am sure that you are okay. According to what I've read, new band patients should strive to consume 3 cups of food (1 cup 3 times) a day. So don't worry. I am sure that you will be just fine. Besides, enjoy it while you can, because once you get your first fill you will not be able to eat the amount that you are currently eating. Take care :(

That sounds GREAT!!! Are you also getting in your Water before and between meals? Maybe add in an afternoon Protien shake. You are getting a good amount of protien at each meal, and that's great! Are you satisfied on that amount of food? Log all that into www.FitDay.com and see what your nutrition looks like with that menu. You will know where to adjust if needed. Are you taking liquid Vitamins? That should help your hunger, too. If you can get 1000-1200 calories a day on mushies this early in the game, it will do wonders for your metabolism.

I was more like kat72 is now...barely able to get any food down and I missed it so much!!! Kat, you should really put off that first fill if you stay this tight. It WILL loosen, I promise. It's not a race, you know that.

Clementine, you are doing great.

The band isn't meant to restrict mushy foods, so that's why you can eat alot.

The band isn't designed to work either until you start getting fills. So, that's another reason you can eat alot.

Just make good choices and concentrate on healing and getting ready for solids. That's the best use of your time and energy right now.

I could eat alot of mushies too, I just stop myself after about a cup because I'm afraid of hurting myself. I'm trying to train my brain that this IS enuf food.

Good luck !!!

I didn't eat the amount i "could" just because i "could". my doc said to stick to roughly 1/4 to 1/2 cup.

I'd eat the following

1/4 cup egg beaters with a small amount of cheese

small mashed potatoes and gravy from KFC

Pintos N cheese - taco bell

Light N fit yogurt - 4oz size

natural applesauce pack - 4oz

Soups of all kinds

and of course popsicles and water!

of course I was running at about 5-600 calories/day which I was told was a bit low... I'm on solids now and going at about 800-1000/day

maybe I was overzealous but it did pay off in a huge return of a 40lb loss.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
