Mushies vs. Chewed Food?

Recommended Posts

I am confused about the term "mushies" - aren't mushies the same as just chewing your food really really good? Do I really have to blend/food process everything as long as I chew forever? Just needing some clarification! Thanks!

I was told that mushies were soft foods, but I still needed to chew well--I didn't need to use a blender or anything. I could eat things like scrambled eggs, cottage cheese and things like that. I just made sure that I chewed my food until it was the consistency of applesauce before I swallowed it.

Yes when you are told you have to have mushy food you have to have mushy food. It is part of the process. It is very easy not to chew enough or for part of the food that you are busy chewing to slip down unchewed.

Advancing your diet too early is one of the major causes of slippage.

Follow your Dr's instructions, don't try to second guess them.. They are there for a reason. Remember the period of time that you are on the mushy part of the diet is only a very small part of your life. It will be over quicker than you think.

For me they not the same--in fact my definition of mushy was things that did not require chewing--my stage was called pureed, then soft solids like eggs, cheese, fish etc then finally regular food. Follow what your doctor or nutritionist says.

A good way to judge if its a mushie is if you would give it to a baby first learning to eat table food.< /p>

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
