Post Op after having the port fixed

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone...

I thought I would share my story. I got banded on Jan 29 2010. I lost 11 lbs in the first month and had two fills. After my 2sd fill about a week later I was in so much pain. I went back to the Dr and he looked at me and said that he didn't think it flipped but it's just my body getting use to it. So 3 weeks went by and it hurt off and on. Last week I went for my 3rd fill and they tried in the office for like 30 min and couldn't find it. So the Dr had me go down to x ray and try under there...nothing again. She told me she thinks that it is on it's side and the only way to fix it is an other surgery. So Thurs morning I went back under the knife. It was on it's side the port was facing up toward me. I felt feel very little pain after surgery, so I wanted to go home. Just to add I live about 1.5 hr away from the hospital. I got some Jello right before I was leaving. The moment that I tried it, it felt like something got stuck in my chest the Dr came in right about this time and said that it most likely is some of the gas from the surgery. On the way home I got some juice but I couldn't keep anything down the whole 2 hr drive with traffic. This went on all night, I couldn't take any pain meds they came right back up. The next morning I had a friend drive me staright back to the Dr office. They took out 3cc of the 6cc that was in there. I felt better right away. I am doing sooo much better now. But I would never get a fill with a surgery again. I am one of those people if something can go wrong it will...That's what my Dr said LOL

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
