Exercising - How much? How often? What type?

Recommended Posts

I was banded 3/29, had a 1.8cc fill from surgery, post-op 4/28 with additional fill to total 3.3cc.

I go for my next fill this Thursday and I am ready because the restriction isn't there anymore I have noticed in the past week.

I was exercising since 1 week after surgery by walking (inside and on treadmill). Walking 2 miles three times a week. Now that the heat has set in here in Houston, I am not out walking. So I joined the Pure Fitness for Women gym. I joined to do the Water aerobics classes to start with and want to build my way up to zumba. Plus other core strength training.

What exercise are you doing that is giving you good results, how often? Any details you can give me I would appreciate. And if you are also doing Water aerobics, how much success have you seen from that?

Thanks!

Brenda

Starting weight 347, I have been banded since 1/5/10 lost about 55 lbs so far.. i have had one fill. only 4cc's the doctor pushed me to get 7 but I was having trouble swallowing and could feel it being to uncomfortable.. need another one bad.. not allot restriction.( only on some days) I have been doing Water areobics since my 2nd week after surgery. I love it my arms and legs are toned it's a fun work out doesn't even feel like it's a work out it's fun.. it's easier to push your self in the water than the treadmill or eliptical. I do a regular work out 2 or 3 days a week and a early saturday morning water areobics class.

I walk on the treadmill or do a step aerobic routine at home about 5 days a week. I also workout with weights 3 days a week- I have a personal trainer who is great. Water aerobics sounds like a great idea. Very low impact. Whatever you do, just do it on a regular basis and I bet you see results. Best wishes!

I lift weights and take spinning classes (indoor cycling) three times per week. I haven't been wearing a heartrate monitor but when I used to spin years ago, I remember burning around 3 or 400 calories (or more) per hour. I think spinning has the most bang for your buck. Up there with running. I haven't been to the gym since Tuesday and my weight loss has totally stalled. On my scale, going to the gym = weight loss and not going to the gym = big, fat plateaus. Do what you can obviously, but the more the better!

I now do 4 days of cardio and 2 days of toning exercises. Mainly I use the elliptical for all of my cardio work. It's easy on the knees and an all over workout.

Best,

Lauren

I work out EVERY day!! I do a variety of classes: i do kickboxing, boot camp, Iron body(strength training), intervals, and spin. I also do 2 days a week of just cardio- either the elliptical or arc trainer.

I have always been exercising so my workout are a bit intensive. I make sure I get cardio in to help drop pounds but you also need weight training for strengthening and tone.

Pushing yourself is good, do as much as you can and push just a little bit further and it makes a big difference. Congrats and enjoy it.

I need help in this area.

I'm doing great with food and I'm losing weight. But I have not been able to establish a regular exercise routine. I have a really good treadmill and I even have a gym membership. But I can't seem to kick in gear.

Any suggestions?

Running worked miracles for me. It took a while to build up to really decent runs (say 5kms or over at decent speeds) but it was worth it. Then I added in circuit training/bootcamp type of stuff in group training sessions. I've never set foot in a gym since being banded, lol. I do it all outdoors.

Nowadays I do four or five runs of about 8kms a week and two bootcamp sessions.

For me, althought what I now do is long range, takes a while to build up to it, cardio and lots of it was what made the most difference. The strength stuff with bootcamp I bought in later to tone and fine tune, it was running that burned the fat and caused the most weight loss.

I am totally into spinning, and do it 6 days a week, along with 2 to 3 days of wt training. I burn anywhere between 600 and 800 calories in 1 hour of class. I am kind of on the intense side, so the calorie burning is high. I have only 1,8cc in my band, and have restriction and have lost 40 #.....I look way thinner than I really am because the spinning is toning me up so well..................

As a former Houstonian, I know that outdoor walking is ---well, not gonna happen! But that's what I do, a lot.

It doesn't have to be walking---but some form of sustained cardio daily is a good idea. I actually do it twice, most days. (My personal trainer, Truman, insists. He is a large shepherd-Lab, and takes me on a FAST 45-minute walk in the morning and at night.)

I also do resistance training every other day---and am going to add power vinyasa yoga to the days I don't do weights when the summer classes begin.

Exercising is a big part of weight loss, even with the band. I have heard a few success stories of people who lost without exercise but I dont want that to be me....I got this band to be healthy, to have a normal life, one that I can 100% participate in and exercise makes me feel really good about myself and my progress. Before surgery, I was in lots of pain from Degenerative Joint Disease in my knees. To walk around my apartment caused pain and I vary rarely left the house. I wouldn't even go to wal mart because of the pain I was in everyday.

Since being banded, or actually before banding I made a commitment to myself to do whatever my surgeon told me.....I have been 90% compliant...I am not perfect. But exercise is very important to me. Because of my weight ( 350 ) at start of journey and my knees, I found that swimming was really good for my body. I have 2 pools in my apartment complex. I go minimum of 5 days a week and do exercises for 40-60 minutes broken into 20 minute segments. I found that in 60 minutes of treading Water, I burn about 600 calories. Not too bad:smile:...

What I specifically do in the water is i go to about the 4 foot deep section and I jog...I jog in place and move my arms back and forth while contracting my stomach muscles. Then I put may arms on the wall, out of the water and spread my legs in and out while contracting stomach muscles and squeezing my butt tight. Then I tread water and add in spurts of like I'm riding a gazelle. Like I'm doing scizzor cuts with my legs...I do this in deeper water so i don't touch. I do that in 4 spouts and count a total of 60 reps each time and tat gets my heart going good. Then is slow it down a bit and tread water, but kinda hard.

In my mind I tell myslef that I'm burning fat, becoming healthier, and that I love myself....these self talks really motivate me and make me work harder.....

I have lost 51 pounds and today is my 2 month band anniversary.....i am quite proud!!:tongue2:

I have decided that in 20 pounds, when I get to 280, I am going to join a gym. Possibly curves, or something else but I deserve a healthy body and heart.

I actually haven't swam in a few days as Friday I had oral surgery:thumbdown: and I've been in some pain....my weight has stalled but I haven't gained!!! I can't wait to get back in the pool.....

HUGS to all of you,

Meg

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
