:clap2: Hi! Just researching lap band surgery and saw your post. Northern California Kaiser is starting to do lap band surgeries now, at least according to the Kaiser GB info class I attended last month. About time!

Even though this may be late information, I am getting the Lap Band in Fremont California with Kaiser, I too was scheduled for Gastro Bypass in 2006 but didn't lose the weight they required (30). I think I was just scared of that surgery. Then 2 months ago I heard they started doing the Lap Band now so they put me back into the program I was able to go straight to the Orientation class and start from there, instead of starting over. I just got home from Fremont today from talking with the surgeon and nutritionist. I need to lose 15 more pounds to get a date. I was disappointed with the Dr. He seemed to really not like the idea of the lap band and told me more of the risks and things he didn't like than positive things. Kinda scared me. He wanted me to have the gastro bypass. I went there so excited and came home so confused. I just wanted to talk to others that have to go through Kaiser and find out how they are doing. He said not a lot of people have had this surgery done there and he can't give any success stories. I want to hear the good stories from Kaiser, so I can get excited again!!

I live in Sacramento and had my lap band done at Kaiser, South San Francisco. They were SUPERB there - incredibly supportive and encouraging. My surgery was June 23rd. I was required to lose 15# before the surgery and I have lost 20# since the surgery. I started with a BMI of 40 and I think I'm at about 35 now. Oh my goodness I've only lost 35 of the 80# I want to lose and I already feel so much better! :) Why don't you ask your PCP to refer you to South San Francisco?

My surgery is the 25th and I haven't had any problems. I'll be having surgery in Fresno. They just started doing them late last month. Maybe you could try for Fresno? I really like the surgeon.

Best wishes!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
