What to eat for mushy stage?

Recommended Posts

So my doctor is very very strict. According to the booklet I got at the seminar, I will not be allowed to eat any Soups, Beans, or carbs until I get to my goal weight. I am not sure how I feel about that, and will be discussing it with the nutritionist on monday.

If I do follow those guidelines, what can I eat in the mushy stage? Whenever I read a thread on here, mashed potatoes, mashed Beans and Soups seem to be pretty much the only suggestions.

Haha, yeah that's the thread that I was reading when I decided to post this. Lots of Soups, hummus, Beans, and mashed potatoes on that thread. None of which I am allowed according to my doctor. Also a lot of the recipes have flour or milk, also which I am not allowed. I am so screwed.

when I was on mushies, Dr. allowed Jello, yougurt and mashed potatoes that about it. I have had great results eating cottage cheese(hated it presurgery) but have learned that if you add fruit it becomes pretty good and I eat alot of it.

Try some Greek style yogurt with honey sprinkled on top. Also, I had Cream of Wheat and added unflavored Protein Powder. My doctor wants me eating mainly Protein and it seems to be working. I did cheat and had creamed Soups but again added the protein powder. How about scrambled eggs with cheese too? Yummy...Best wishes.

I don't know what the problem with Soups would be! Most have very few carbs and are pretty much a must-have during the liquid phase. You could have creamed spinach, mashed cauliflower (almost as good as mashed potatos), chicken or tuna salad, etc.

I'm avoiding mashed potatoes like the plague. Doc told us that the fastest way to beat the band is to eat a bunch of potatoes. Plus, I'm such a carbaholic, I'm afraid that if I have even a bite I'll fall into old, bad habits.

I've been eating cottage cheese and yogurt. I'm terrified to try chicken salad, but I may give that a shot tonight. I don't have much of an appetite, so I haven't really had a craving for anything yet. If I do, I may have to get more creative.

I can understand that - potatoes do go down real smooth. I've only had them once since I moved into soft foods and that was because I was out for a birthday dinner and couldn't find anything else on the menu that was soft enough to eat. I'm eating a lot of yogurt too but by dinner, I feel like I need something hardier. Last night I made creamed spinach using milk, garlic and shredded parmesan. It was really good!

And today I got chicken salad from the grocery store and ate about 4 oz. of that. It's probably not the best choice out there but we're kind of limited in options right now and I'm still barely hitting 800 calories a day so I'm not terribly worried about it.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
