Pre-op is moving along

Recommended Posts

Gosh, I feel like I need an assistant just to keep up with all my appointments, lol. Went to the seminar/first appointment on 5/5.

Yesterday, I went to a cardiologist. They did an in office EKG. THey saw some thickening of the heart muscles. Now need to get an echocardiogram and a stress test next week. Doc is confident I will pass those tests and will be approved for surgery. He said the thickening is most likely due to my obesity and will clear up after I lose the weight. Because I have Mitral Valve prolapse though he wants to see me again in a month, and continue with regular appointments throughout my weight loss journey.

This morning I went for pre-op blood work. They took 9 vials! 9!!! I was quite scared when she started pulling them off the shelf, lol. Then I went for my opper GI xray. The fizz and the barium were nasty, but it wasn't too bad overall.

Thursday I meet with my pcp, and Monday I have my first meeting with the surgeon, plus I will meet with the nurse practitioner and dietitian again, and I have my first support group.

Wednesday I have my echo-cardiogram, and Thursday I have my stress test. Even though they are being done at the same place, I am not allowed to do them on the same day or insurance won't pay for it. Makes no sense, and is very inconvenient because it's over 20 minutes away. Stupid insurance.

Anyway, just wanted to write down all the I have going in. It's a lot to take in, a lot to keep track of.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
