7.5cc out of 10cc - Bad Reflux at Night - Anyone else experience this??

Recommended Posts

I just received my fourth fill last week and now have some serious restriction (7.5cc out of 10cc). I can drink liquids slowly and eat a small meal......just have to be slow and have tiny bites.

Just recently, I have experienced reflux at night when I lie down. It generally wakes me up several times a night and I have to cough several times to clear my throat. The saliva burns my throat where I know something else is going on besides a simple cough. I have never had this before, am I too tight or am eating too late at night (i.e. a couple of hours before bedtime) ??

This sounds to me like night cough and reflux (I have not experienced it) but maybe you are too tight? I have read that some people get this when they are TOO restricted. Maybe call your doc and see if her can remove just like a half cc? Good luck and keep us posted!

You are too tight. Call your doc. This happened to me and I waited too long and they took ALL of my fill out because I was so inflamed. I, however, could not eat and could barely drink anything because of the swelling. I would wake up in a sound sleep coughing and throwing up in my mouth and my throat would burn.

Reflux and night cough are definitely a sign of your band being too tight. I think if you are eating a couple hours before bed, that should be enough time. If you had said you were eating right before bed or within an hour, I might try cutting that out first (if you are otherwise happy w/your level of restriction). I used to always get reflux when I was pregnant in the 3rd trimester and had to watch what I ate later at night. And, also sleep on my back w/my head propped up on pillows. Its really pretty miserable and I personally wouldn't do it just to keep my band tighter. I think you could probably still have good restriction without being quite that tight.

I'm actually going in for a slight unfill myself today because even just drinking Water is uncomfortable. I had a little reflux last night as well, but it was only Water because I haven't eaten since my fill yesterday.

Ugaband - you sound just like me a few months ago. Scared the crap out of me because I never had a problem with reflux before and the gagging, coughing and burning was not fun. I could only drink small amount of Water at a time and most food was just uncomfortable to eat and took a long time. I also would pb or slime 2-3 times a week which I did NOT want to have.

I ended up with a .1 cc unfill the first time and when I still had occasional reflux I had another .1 cc unfill and that took care of the problem. Now I only get it occasionally if I eat 60-90 minutes before bedtime. Not something I normally do. I feel now that I'm at the perfect restriction and I don't have any foods that are a problem for me to eat. I still can only eat small amounts so the volume really didn't change and I stay satiated for hours. I was scared to get an unfill for fear that I would be able to eat more and always be hungry. But that didn't happen. It just made everything more comfortable...eating and drinking and little if any reflux.

Honestly, looking back I don't know what I was thinking to stay that way for 6-8 weeks, but I'm sure glad I got the unfill. Life is so much better now.

Please consider just a tiny unfill and see if that works for you.

Yup...you're too tight...same thing happened to me...had to have some removed and they also put me on a prescription for acid reflux...take care of it now before they have to remove all of your Fluid.

Good luck.

Yes, you are too tight. The same thing was going on with me. I had a 0.5 fill Last Monday and yesterday had to go get half of that fill taken out. I felt instant relief. Was able to eat better and slept all night. About the only thing to do is get a unfill. I took acid med, Pepto, Mylanta, and drank milk (I know this is a no-no, but when it is the only relief you can get and the only thing that does not give you HB.) Definitely get in w/ your MD. Reflux can cause serious problems if left untreated. My MD said there is a fine line between some loose restriction and way too tight, he was not kidding!!!! I found this out first hand!!

I get a little occasionally, but only occasionally. I can eat and drink so I don't plan to get an unfill. It is uncomfortable. I get a drink of Water and chew up a tums and it seems to fix it when it happens. You do sound too tight so I would definitely get a slight unfill!! Hugs!!!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
