Losing Weight on Doc Supervised Diets

Recommended Posts

I thought a thread about losing weight on the doctor supervised diets would be a good one. There are so many of us who have to complete this necessary step for insurance approval. I resented it so much at first, but now I am kinda thankful for the process. I am really takiing a hard look at my diet and triggers, which I believe will help me be successful after the wls. I also am going into this process with eyes wide open. Maybe I'll be one of the lucky ones who never feels hungry without the first fill...not! I'm trying to view the diet I'm on right now as the beginning of my weight loss. It's also the diet that will carry me through bandster hell that can last several months (longer for some!) I am mentally preparing for 6-9 months of doing this on my own, and then the band will be there when I need it the most. I believe only with the help of the band will I reach and maintain my goal.

I think that is an excellent attitude. I have just started my supervised diet and I am viewing at as my time to "practice" some of the new things that will be necessary after the band. I'm chewing everything slower and into tiny tiny bites. I'm working on the not drinking after eating (so far I'm only up to 15 minutes) but I've got three months to get it up to the required hour. I'm using this time to think about my triggers as well and to start mentally preparing myself for being a thinner person instead of thinking of myself as a fat person all the time. I'm also reading a book called Women, food, and God. The author was on Oprah last week. I'm not a big Oprah watcher, but this woman seemed to have some insight so I went and got the book. So far it does address some of the things about our relationship with food and our feelings when we eat.

I am also having to do a supervision process for 3 months with a nutritionist. I am grateful to have her help before my surgery. I did not understand all the changes that I will need to make. I am one who does not eat enough throughout the day, she has me eating every 3 hours, small meals. I have also realized that I eat very, very fast. I have tried to slow down, sometimes I catch myself and sometimes I don't. Usually I realize it when I finished, realizing that I just gobbled up my food, that is going to be the most difficult thing for me to change. Does anyone have any ideas on how to help with this problem. I eat at the table, I don't watch tv while I eat, I am usually on the go due to my job so I am having to just throw food down my throat and go. If you have any ideas please help!

they are supposed to go by your starting BMI for approval purposes.

I am a teensy concerned about my total weight loss over the next 3 months. Not that I won't lose any (I've already lost 7 pounds in the first week and I do know it will slow down now) but if I lose more than 20 pounds on the supervised diet, my husband will have the attitude of "well, you just lost 20 pounds on your own. Just keep going on your own until you lose it all."

Karma, that's the same load of stuff that I kept telling myself every time I went to the doctor and asked about WLS. "If I have to do this for 6 months and lose weight, then I can just do it by myself."

Research shows though, that once you reach a certain level, you can lose it, but you're almost guaranteed to gain it back. That is crazy not healthy.

You're doing this for him and for you, but mostly, you need to do it for you.

I asked my surgeons office about losing weight during the three months and the surgery not being paid for by insurance and she said that is not what happens. The insurance company wants me to go to the dietician to learn how to be successful with the band. I went to see the dietician and she said the same thing, that she is there to teach me how to choose the right foods because I will need to get my nutrients from a small amount of food, so I need to learn a new way of eating and weight loss with this new eating style is just a bonus. I have explained to my family that I am having to learn a new way of eating and yes, I may lose some weight but this is to prepare myself for when I have the band, this is a teaching/learning time for me. I don't know if that helps anyone, but talking to your family about the support your going to need through the ENTIRE process including the begining stages is important.Remember,

 Take it day by day!!!!

116 days to go!!!

I am on day 15 of my supervised diet and have lost 7 pounds. I'm doing very well, eating about 1300 cals. a day on average and exercising (walking 1 hr. or 45 mins. on the elliptical) about 5x a week. I've only had one day (so far) of giving in to temptation which was day 3. It's interesting because I am really not hungary, I'm making good food choices, etc. but I can't help but feel that something is missing. I have an emptiness inside that is not hunger. I think I'm going through a withdrawal of sorts. I'm not worried that I'm going to cheat so much, it's just this weird feeling that I've really never dealt with before. Even in my days of being able to lose 25 pounds on ww, I've never had this feeling. I think it is here because I know in my head that THIS IS IT. By choosing this path, I am turning my back on my habits that have brought me to this place and I think there is some sadness to it for me. Just another perspective on this complicated problem of obesity.

I'm finally towards the end of my 6+ months, towards the end of my pre-op diet- I have my surgery Wednesday the 26th. I'm grateful for the time because now I'm used to the idea and know I can manage it. I practiced, practiced, practiced and went through the emotional roller coaster, and am now ready.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
