Need Lap Band Buddy / Mentor Excited but Scared

Recommended Posts

I am so excited that tomorrow I am having my surgery but in the same I am scared. I am excited of the prospect of taking control of my life again but scared of the unknown.

Does anyone have any advice as to what to expect the first week after surgery? I would like to be mentally prepared for the pain... Will I be in pain? Or discomfort? I heard the port site will be uncomfortable and I will learn how to bend so not to agitate it but any other advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance! God Bless all!

My best advice is to follow the diet recommendations of your Dr to the letter. I think this helps your band settle in for the long term. Also don't expect any weight loss that week as your body will be busy healing from surgery. I really wasn't in any pain after the first day or so. Don't worry you will do fine.

What to expect???? Well - expect it to be your own experience. Different to some similar to others. I was sore and tender but not really in pain. What I was ~ I was VERY TIRED. I had no energy for weeks. I did not have gas pain as many others did.

I have learned in these few short months since my surgery is that I am ALWAYS learning, adjusting, re-learning.

Head hunger vs. real hunger

Hungry or just thirsty (now I chew gum waiting for that 1 hour after meal drink)

Am I being honest about my eating (now tracking online with myfitnesspal.com)

Am I still sticking to my docs rules (different for everyone)

What is that strange sound coming from my stomach? How come I feel full and then I burp ~ and the fullness is gone? When am I ever gonna poop:blushing:? What! loose stool - where did that come from?

scale is steady now it is stuck - oh look it's moving again - oh look, it is stuck again!

Did I eat too much? Oh crap did I ruin my band??? Panic - no - everything is fine. I need a fill. Maybe I'll be that lucky person who gets restriction on that first fill!! Nope - three more fills later - still no restriction, but I WILL get there!

Truth is, it has been a roller coaster. I am glad I am on it. I continue to learn daily. I continue to have struggles. I continue to have some successful days. I continue.....

You will go through a lot of ups and downs but along the way if you can learn to enjoy the ride, you will be just fine. We will get there. See you at the finish line.

Best of luck!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
