So, my teeth were bothering a little before the surgery. It seemed to coincide with me changing to a mostly protein/no carb diet. My lower back teeth were crazy sensitive, and chewing would drive me nuts. It would come and go, though.

Now that I started the all-liquid diet it’s gotten much worse and spread to my upper teeth. You think I wouldn’t be able to tell (since I'm on liquids), but when I take my pain meds or brush my teeth, it’s ridiculous. I took a sip of mouthwash and ended up spitting it all over my mirror.

I’m using toothpaste for sensitivity and there’s little to no sugar in my diet. Does anyone have any idea why this is happening, or perhaps is going through something similar?

I don't think I'd attribute this to diet change--it sounds as though it's more likely coincidental to the timing of the diet change.

Have you seen your dentist? If the pain is worse since surgery, it's possible that intubation aggravated a minor problem (cavity, loose filling, etc) that was already starting to bug you.

I've always had tooth sensitivity problems but yes, they have become worse since the surgery. Avoid doing major dental work in the three months after your surgery though, as the blood thinners they gave you at the time of surgery have a long residence time and will make you bleed like crazy. I had bleeding problems just from brushing my teeth for a good while after surgery. It would not surprise me at all if the blood thinners are the cause of the increased sensitivity because my problems subsided a bit after 3 months. Talk to your dentist about it.

Interesting thought. I will look into that!

Thanks (both of you)!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
