I just joined the site! I have an impending surgery date @ Nyköpings Sjukhuset for my lap band surgery.

I'm so glad to find the site, but I am a bit worried about some things not being transferrable from USA to Sweden.

I.E. Health supplements, liquid diet options, Protein shakes, etc. Also I'm really interested in a local area support group. I live in Eskilstuna. Which is mellansverige. We are about an hr west of Stockholm.

Also, my first language is english, not swedish. I'm originally from USA.

Tack tack!

Hej!

I'm planning on moving to Sweden next year (I will be having my band placed here in the US next month.) I need to find out where/how do you go about getting a band fill (I will be living in Göteborg, but am willing to travel if I need to.) Do you know what the most common term for gastric banding surgery? I've seen simply "gastric banding," I've seen the generic "övervitsoperation" (though that seems to be geared towards gastric bypass rather than banding..Also seen the generic "fetmakirurgi" or "obesitaskirurgi." I just need to find out the Swedish terminology about the name of the procedure/device and about calling around to inquire about getting a fill.

Tack så mycket! Lycka till med bandet!

Hej Nora!

I would imagine to get the fill, you would have to contact your local vårdcentral when you get to Sweden (and get your personnummer, if you don't already have one). Explain the situation to your doctor, and he would give you a remiss to the people who handle these kinds of surgeries. Now, there are sometimes people in the smaller vårdcentrals who are able to do the fill. For example, I just got my first fill on Thurs, and I had to drive 1.15 hr to Nyköping (where I had the surgery done) to get my first fill and see the surgeon to make sure everything is alright. But she told me there is one woman in all of Eskilstuna (where I live) that could possibly take care of the fills for me in the future. But since your going to götebörg, I would imagine you wouldn't have to go very far. I'm sure there is a hospital there that does it. But first things first go to the vårdcentral and talk to a doc. They will send you on your way from there.

As far as what to call it, gastric banding. That's what I say to people here and it works. Just be careful, because when I was in the hospital after surgery they gave me the diet plan for bypass, because banding wasn't so common and they didn't understand me. But on all my paperwork from the surgeon it says Gastric Banding. You won't need to worry so much about always finding the swedish translation of words. Many people here speak english, and if your uncomfortable about speaking in swedish at a doctors you have the right to request a translator be present, then they have to accommodate.

One last thing (totally off topic). If you haven't found it yet, check out Amerikanska It's a forum for people who move from america to sweden and vice versa. Great resource of info. :)

Good luck with your surgery!

Hejsan

I'm looking into having labband done in a private hospital in sweden or germany, do you know if private hospitals do that in Sweden. I assume yours was a public hospital from what I can tell? If it was private how much was the cost if you dont mind me asking?

Thank you very much, your response would help a lot.

Best Jeppe

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
