So I leave tomorrow for Mexico and have my surgery done next Friday. I have spent about 4 months reasearching everything on the Lap Band.

My wife came out last night and tells me she does not agree with my decision to get this done. She tells me she will support my decision, but thinks I have not tried hard enough to lose it on my own. Over the past 14 years, I have lost 100lbs, 60lbs twice and 50lbs....only to put it all back on. My mother I told tonight and I figured she would be the critical one, but she is very supportive because she has worried about my weight problems for years now.

I am kinda disappointed that my wife does not agree with this procedure, and just mentioned it to me a day before I leave!! I think more than anything I just needed to vent. We had our first child in Feb and that is when I made the final decision to go through with this, to get healthly and be there for my son for a very long time!!

Well I had a spouse who did not agree and as I started to lose weight he resented me more and more...just tell her your doing it for you and your family that's all you can do is try and explain your intentions ..my realationship ended and I'm now married to a wonderful guy who loves me dearly..I'm so happy I had my surgery and I hope you are to..

Thanks for that. I know she will not resent me. I think she is just nervous and scared that I am going to Mexico to have this done and she will not be with me. My sister who is a Nursing student will meet me down in Cancun and be there the whole time.

I was just shocked to hear this that was all...especially last minute.

She feels like I need to address the emotional issues (I am not sure what they are except eating when I am bored). To me I will need to find something else to fill the void, and if I need to get help I am fully prepared to see a counselor.

Awwww... she's probably just worried, that's all. Especially now that it's so close. Tell her you love you, and you know she's worried, and that you will be FINE- and, in fact, better than ever.

And she's right-- you will have to deal with the emotional eating stuff (or boredom), because the band doesn't keep you from eating out of boredom. (though it will limit how much.)

Hugs!!

Hang in there! This must be scary for her too. :) I had my surgery in Mexico too -- with Dr. Rumbaut, and had a really great experience. I hope that yours goes very well too.

Remind your wife that one of the best benefits about the lap band is that it will help you keep the weight off after you lose it. I believe the statistics are that 95% of people who lose 100 lbs or more through dieting gain it all back (and usually with more).

Best wishes,

Catherine

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
