Tart Cherry Juice for post-op pain

Recommended Posts

My lap-band nutritionist recommended this to make it possible to cut down on NSAIDs and other anti-inflammatories. I have Sjogren's syndrome and mild RA so have to deal with inflammation and nerve pain constantly. Tart cherries, according to articles on the internet, have both cox1 and cox2 (think Bextra, Vioxx and Celebrex) inhibitor properties, and enough of them to make it noticable. I was sceptical but tried it anyway and I woke up the next morning without my usual back pain. My husband had taken a glass and the gout pain in his knee and footwas much better. Still wondering about placebo effect, I told several friends about it and they reported that it worked on them as well. Our grocery store now has problems keeping it in stock as the grapevine has worked it's magic. 8 oz is 140 calories so you have to keep that in mind, and I add sugar because it is very tart, though you can use artificial sweetener. I am posting this because it helped a lot with my post-op pain. After a glass I could feel the swelling around the port was smaller...and it hurt less. It got worse after the juice wore off so I drank another glass. It might or might not work for others so I'm passing it on. It has to be the pure "tart cherry juice", not sweet or dark cherries, and not a juice mix. On the net you can order concentrate or capsules to mix with other food which would end up costing less.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
