Banded May 5 and STARVING!!!

Recommended Posts

Just wondering if anyone else 4-5 days out from surgery starting feeling hungry this fast. I thought I wouldn't have an appetite for at least 2 or 3 more days.

I go to First Breakfast at the hospital on Wednesday and that's when I can start to have full liquids and Protein shakes. Until then I'm on Clear Liquids.

But I'm starving!! My stomach is constantly growling. I am so sick of broth that when my husband brought me a cup of it tonight I smelled it and I almost yacked. Life Water, jell-o and popsicles are NOT cutting it! Granted, I can't eat much, but 2 days ago I could only eat about 1/4 cup of jell-o but today I ate the whole 1/2 cup and I could kill for some chili or cream Soup or mashed potatoes.

Today I actually started crying because I am so hungry I could chew off my arm. I just want my stomach to stop grumbling!! I had to turn the TV up louder so I could hear it over my stomach!!

I know I'm not supposed to *eat* anything but Clear Liquids but is there ANYTHING I can do to not feel like I'm starving and make my stomach stop growling??? I can't even sleep because I'm so hungry!!

Today I have been seriously asking myself if this was really a good idea. I can't live like this!!

it doesn't last forever so calm down

what i did was send someone to a restaurant to get french onion Soup

they brought it home and strained it for me

the change in having that versus broth right out of the box was mind numbing

next meal I sent him to get homemade chicken noodle soup for me and did the same thing

the extra spices, whatever made a big difference for me

My doc also cleared me for Jello and applesauce on day 5.

hang in there

OMG, you poor thing. I thought I was not handling it. I was banded on 5/04/10 and luckily for me I am doing better than I was. I was banded in Mexico and have had no issues except that pressure on my chest which is gone today.

I was one of 6 banded that day, and for a second I was jealous because a new friend already lost 8 lbs and I am only at 3 lbs.

As the previous poster said, ordering that Soup did wonders. Since my date I went on date night with my husband and had soup out, and tonight I ordered Won ton soup, minus all the stuff. I was soooo thrilled on day 4 to get Cream of Wheat, I think it was all I was thinking of.

Hang in there. I normally haven't posted alot but read alot from my iphone, and I have to tell you that has helped sooo much. Since everyone is different, no one can give you the exact answer, but just know your on your way. Live life to the fullest everyday, and something I like to drink is Powerade Zero and Crystal Lite. Send me a message if you want to chat.

That sounds a bit rough Amey - my doctor only required Clear Liquids for 2 days and then onto other liquids for a week, getting thicker into the second week. So I was well and truly onto Protein Shakes by day 4 and didnt have any problems with that. I am surprised they make you wait that long but I guess better safe than sorry. Good luck

I didn't realize I was hungry until my stomach started growling, but I didn't have any appetite. So I decided to try something other than broth. I had surgery on the 6th, and I just tried sugar free applesauce with no problems, but last night I tried cream of potato with 2 cans milk, so it was really soupy, and blended it in the blender so all the potatoes weren't solid, and it was heaven. Of course I can only eat like 1/4 cup before I'm full, just take it easy, it's what you feel like you can handle, unless your doctor instructed you otherwise, then just find things to do that will keep you busy.

I was banded on the 3rd of May and I'm hungry, too. But my doc says 2 weeks of Clear Liquids and that's what I'm doing. He's wiser than I am. There must be a reason why he's told me to do this. I see him in a couple of days. Maybe he'll tell me something different when he sees how well I'm doing. I sure hope so. I hope I can at least go to Protein Shakes and full liquids. Good luck to you.

I was banded on May 3rd. I was hungry by thursday. I was able to do full liquids, but I don't like plain milk. So I talked to the surgery coordinator and she gave me the ok to try yogurt and cottage cheese. OMG :thumbup:I was in heaven. I moved onto mushies, tuna fish flaked really well with low fat mayo, same with chicken, mashed potatoes today...just one day early.

I have tolerated everything fine and by my scale I have lost about 8 pounds since the 5th.

I had some crazy pain last night at my port site after bending over. So I am headed to my surgeon to make sure everything is ok and still in the right spot....I certainly hope so:confused:

Hey folks,

My first post. I have been lurking for a while. I was banded May 3rd as well. I did the liquids religously before the surgery and I think I was down 14 pounds before the surgery and another 8 since the surgery but the last couple days I have gone to sugar free Jello pudding and even had a sugar free fugsicle. The scale stopped moving and now I am scared to death the only way I will loose weight is to stay on the liquid diet. I know I am probably over reacting. I see the doctor tomorrow at his office and I am grateful to have lost the 20 pounds or so but if I have to stay on liquids forever I don't think I will ever make it. Is this normal? Will I feel better about this after the first fill or so? I am doing alot of the walking and the gas pain went away a day or so ago. Am I panicing to early?:scared2:

I know the feeling, i had my surgery on May 5th also and i just called my doctors office today and told them that this broth and juice diet is not cutting it. Im still hungry 30 to 35 minutes after drink the broth. The only thing that helps a little is when i eat a yougurt or Jello 30 minutes later when i get hungry. i expect to be hearing from my doctor tomorrow. Some people that went through the same thing and their doctors went ahead and let them start on their muschy foods before their two week liquid diet was up. That's what i'll be recommended also. :scared2:

I was so hungry today that I finally called my surgeon's nurse tonight and left a message that I was so hungry that my dog was looking pretty good to me and that it was either my arm that I was going to chew off or the dog gets it.. lol... She texted my surgeon and he said Welcome to the road to recovery and said I can start Greek yogurt, scrambled egg with cheese, full liquids for now with nothing else added. So I'm thrilled to just be able to have something other than clear liquids. I was starting to chew on my tongue but thought I could stand two more days until my appointment with the surgeon. Then.. I figured what do I have to lose so called the nurse. Boy am I glad I did. I'm down 12 pounds in one week.

As long as you are taking in fewer calories that what you need... you are going to lose weight. Your body will need time to adjust. One day you might see a loss... maybe none for a couple.. but you'll lose. Don't fret. Think of those thousands of calories we consumed to get us to the point of obesity. We're never going back there. We'll lose it. Just stick to the plan and get in your exercise. We can do this!

Hey ya'll. I was banded May 4th. My doc requires two weeks postop Clear Liquids but allows SF popsicles and SF Jello. I can only have 15 mL (about 3 teaspoons) every 15 minutes while awake. I'm not a Water drinker at all, so during the 2-week preop Protein Drink only phase, i drank so much lemonade that i am sick of it. today i bought some gatorade, and I wish I could chug it like a beer drinker chugs a pitcher of beer!! It is so delicious, and I am so thirsty. i'm not hungry, per se, because even if i was allowed to have anything I wanted to eat, I am physically not interested in eating and swallowing. I just want to TASTE the food, and FEEL the texture in my mouth and how good it FEELS to swallow it! ha! that sounds crazy I know!

The poster who talked about straining their favorite Soup is really onto something. Tonight I stopped by my favorite Japanese restaurant and got a small container of their onion Soup. It's really an oniony broth with nothing solid in it. You put your Durkee French Fried Onion Rings in on the side. Of course i didn't get any of those. But let me tell you... it was HEAVENLY!!!! I sipped on it like hot tea all evening long. I know it's still not anything to chew on, but just the change was an encouragement to me to hang on for one more week of this!!! Good luck. I hope you feel better about things soon. It will be worth it in the long run. Just take it one hour, (one minute if necessary) and tell yourself, I CAN DO ANYTHING FOR ONE DAY (hour, minute... whatever) and just plug on through. CathyB

I called the Lap Band center at the hospital today to talk to the nutritionist. I told her how hungry I was, about how shaky I am and weak I was even crying.

Basically I got 'Are you getting enough fluids?' Uh...yea...you could float the titanic with the sloshing and gurgling in my stomach. And then I got 5 minutes about how it's so important to wait the full week on clear liquids and how Thursday at First Breakfast I can have full liquids.

Well, I'm thinking that since I had surgery on Wednesday that this Wednesday should be my one week. Right?!?!

I tried the Soup from a restaurant and man oh man was that awesome!!! I sent DH to a deli that I love that has 4-5 Soups every day made fresh from scratch. They had a vegetable beef that was brothy...I explained my situation and asked for a cup of just the broth...and they did it :scared2: It was SOOO good!! AND they had my favorite soup today but it's a creamed soup so DH asked it would be good to freeze or keep in the fridge till Thursday. They said nope. BUT they made a special note to make sure they had it on Thursday so I could come and get some....how awesome is that???? DH just might redeem himself after wrecking my car after all :cheers2:

Well, I have to go back to work in the morning so I better get to bed.

It's so great to keep in touch with everyone like this. I don't think a real May Bandsters thread was ever started so I really like this one. Let's all keep in touch!!!

I was banded at NYU by Dr. Kurian on 5/4. I'm always amazed by all the different "rules". I'm allowed 2 shakes a day. I use Muscle Milk light, and all the liquid, broth etc I want. The Soups like Pacific and Imagine are organic and sold in a box are very good. I watch the calories on them but they are a wonderful addition to your diet. Drinking really helps. If I feel hungry it works wonders. I can't believe we are on the other side of waiting for the surgery. I am on this liquid diet for 10 days. On Friday I go to the doctor and then I start my second 10 days and go to the yogurt, humus, applesauce phase. And then food. As a mother's day gift my daughter-in-law made me Granny Smith applesauce which is in my freezer waiting for me. How nice.

I'm so glad I found you all!! I was banded on May 3. I was doing fine with the liquid diet, until Sunday. Stupid me made brunch for the mom's. I was soooo hungry, I thought I was going to slap someone! I'm so moody (poor husband)....I called the nurse where I got the procedure done....asked if there was anything that can be done? I'm following all the rules, but the 4 oz every hour isn't cutting it. She put me on Phentermine....diet pill...to help me get thru the next 3 weeks of liquid diet. It's magic...not hungry at all...having to set an alarm on my phone to remind me that it's time to drink a shake. I did this procedure so I wouldn't have to do diet pills anymore...but I'll take them to get thru this phase, until solid foods. I'm glad I was able to find this place, to see that I'm not the only one hungry post-op. I thought something might have went wrong with the band.

Julie

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
