Thoughts on Life insurance after weight loss and lab band?

Recommended Posts

How does the life insurance industry factor in WLS, particularly the Lap Band?

Since I've been a mom I've had a life insurance policy, I think I bought a 10 yr term- about 5 years ago. They ran all sorts of bloodwork and weight- before approval and cost.

So, when I buy another policy in a few years with a healthy weight, what will they think of the band? Has anyone recently gone through a life insurance eval post band? Thanks for any info or experience you might have on this.

I recently took out a life insurance policy for my husband and I. I had already had my band, and they had question me about the band, and they talked to a specialist about the band. Finally after a month or so of several calls and questions, they approved the life insurance policy. It just cost more than if I didn't have the band. The amount is not that much more, but it did increase from the original cost they told me it would be.

I went through Northwestern Mutual and got the highest preferred rate!!

I was surprised because our broker "prepped" me for a high premium because of the surgery (I was 10 months post op at the time). He specifically told me that insurance policies for WLS patiens is much higher than others.

After all the normal testing, he was shocked to see the results and my rate. I was PERFECT in EVERY WAY (test results wise anyway). The underwriter told him that I was the "poster child" for perfect health! It was that reason that outweighed the surgery. :)

I just got a new policy, it was much higher than quoted once they finished underwriting it. They claimed the band and sleep apnea. The sleep apnea is gone after my weight loss but I don't have health insurance to have another test. So I guess I will just pay the higher premiums until I have health insurance again.

Thank you for the replies! Glad to read people are being underwirtten. I just hope the cost is less expensive than it would be if obesity was part of the factor. As more people get banded, maybe premiums will continue to fall.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
