So, I am having surgery on Tuesday 4 hours away from home. I am taking my chicken broth with me, but how hungry will I really be the day of the surgery? I know you can't eat before, but what about after...I realize it will only be Clear Liquids, but what should I expect? Will I want to sleep the majority of the time? We will be in a hotel, so I am kinda concerned about things. To me, it is not ideal to be so far away from home, but I have not choice. Reassurance?

The last thing you will be thinking about is food. You will be in pain. Bring a bottle of Water and chicken broth if you're staying the night in the hotel. I wasn't really hungry, but I knew I had to have something in my stomach. Plus, I wanted to put something in my stomach when I took the pain meds.

I agree, I was absolutely not-at-all hungry day of surgery. And for next several days!

I wasn't hungry post surgery either - I wasn't in a lot of pain, I just wasn't hungry.

I was very, very relieved NOT to have any hunger after the surgery! The clear liquid diet had me sooo hungry before the surgery that I could barely think straight. The night before the surgery I was thinking about it and realized it's kind of like a toothache, by the time you're getting the root canal done you are so miserable you'd do ANYTHING to stop the pain. I was so hungry I didn't even have night-before nerves. My surgery was at 8 a.m, so I didn't have a long day of hunger on that date. I had NO hunger for more than a week after the surgery, had to remind myself to drink and have my Clear Liquids. I had the surgery two weeks ago, my appetite has returned but it's not nearly as awful as it was during that pre-op phase.

Not long now! Hang in there!!!

Nancy

I was not allowed to have anything by mouth the day of surgery - both before and after. The next morning after the barium swallow I was given an 8 oz bottle of Crystal Light and told to take a small drink of it every five minutes to be sure that I could keep liquids down OK. I think it took about 1 1/2 hours to finish that bottle. Once that was deemed to have gone down without difficulty I was told that I could have liquids as desired upon my return to home. There was zero hunger though, just thirst.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
