need help getting 60 grams of protein, hair starting to thin.

Recommended Posts

I started to notice my hair coming out much more and faster than normal, and then I figured I should start coutning how much Protein I was actually getting. Turns out I am only getting like 35 to 45 a day. So I need help on how to do it.

I do drink a shake some days, but I can't every day. Other days I have an egg and some turkey bacon. I normally have a Protein Bar as a snack, which is 14 grams. My lunch is most of the time another 13-15 grams.

What can I add in or substitute to get me up to my 60. I hate fish and cottage cheese so please don't suggest those.

Any help would be appreciated, before I go bald.

Have you considered the Protein bullet drinks? They pack a large amount of protein - typically more than 40 grams - into a very small drink. How about a moist piece of grilled chicken? Also wondering about Beans and soy products like tofu? Yogurt, low fat cheese and even skim milk might be good additions too. Good luck.

One easy way is to use New whey Protein bullets. I used the 42g ones. You get 42 g and each one is only 3 1/2 oz, so it is really easy to drink. I have seen someone else suggest the Pure Unflavored powder sold on Bariatriceating.com. They are out at the moment, but I plan on buying it and adding it to Soups.

PURE Unflavored Protein Isolate - 42 scoops per container - perfect for Soups & broth - SOLD OUT

Greek yogurt has approx. 15-18 grams of Protein in a 6ounce serving... 2 a day and theres 1/2 the protein you are looking for - I suggest getting it w. fruit bc its a tad different than reg yogurt, I found it not so great at 1st, now i cant get enough of it -I love it!!! Do an online search for "list of foods high in protein", I just did it and tons of websites comes up w. a list side by side of foods, calories, protein. Good Luck!

If you go to bodychoicenutrition.net, they have the 25g Protein Shots on BOGO special right now. This is what I use when I need to supplement Protein. If you have trouble getting solid protein (like chicken) down, one thing that helps for me is to eat it w/a sauce or I even like cold chicken w/salad dressing. I'm not always that tight, but sometimes I am and then I need some sort of sauce w/my meat.< /p>

As stated above greek yogart is an excellent source of Protein and is low in sugar. It is an aquired taste but I, too, now love it. Dribble some honey on top and you're good to go...Best wishes!!!

Don't worry...the hair falls out for a few months and then it stops as quickly as it started.

Examples of Protein that I eat:

Egg Beaters with cheese sprinkled on it

Black Beans or Refried Beans with cheese

Wendy's Chili with Cheese

Nachos I make at home with Frito Bean Dip, cooked hamburger meat with Taco Bell seasoning and cheese

Mozerella Cheese Sticks

Musle Milk in the morning

hair loss seems to be more due to the trauma of anesthesia/surgery (which interrupts the normal falling-out/regrowth cycle) than anything else, though getting enough Protein is really important. (So is taking your multivitamin--and it can't hurt to take Biotin, too.)

If you're not getting 60 grams, you really do need to push a bit.

I'm not a fan of the Protein bullets. They used to be the best protein available, but now it is known that the Proteins that make them up are NOT as bioavailable as other, just-as-easily available Proteins. whey protein isolate is better absorbed by the body. If you're going to spend $$ on protein, and choke it down, you might as well be using protein that your body will use.

My favorite proteins are the Inspire line available at bariatriceating.com

Aside from protein supplements, do you tolerate lean meats, poultry, and fish? Legumes? Fat-free cottage cheese and Greek yogurt?

I get around 100 grams a day with no struggle--I have a warm Protein shake in the morning (helps dissolve my Vitamin capsule), and Beans, turkey, chicken, fish, beef pork or fat free-cottage cheese or Greek yogurt (with a bit of unflavored Protein Powder added in) at each meal. If I haven't topped 80 grams by dinnertime, I add in a Protein Shake in the evening.

Protein should be the mainstay of your diet at this point---lean protein and nonstarchy veggies. If your doctor okays grains and other starches, they should take a bit of a back seat until you learn to reliably get the amount of protein your body needs.

I know you said you don't like Cottage cheese, but I add just a little bit of yummy full flavoured Salad Dressing, ranch or caesar and mix it through. Tastes so much better and as you only use a teaspoon it is low in calories and fat - full fat versions tend to have less sugar and less calories so splurge on a teaspoon of the real stuff :-)

I do the muscle milk light. It does have a funny taste that bothers some but It doesn't bother me. If it does bother you Costo has a shake that has no aftertaste by premiere Protein.

I do the mini greek yougerts by yoplait(I think). It has honey with it and I find that it isn't as gritty as the dannon one.

I do greek yogert, Protein shakes, Beans, and cheese for my Protein. If worse gets to worse get the unjury unflavored powder. It can be added to almost anything.

thanks for the ideas,

I do have a question, do you just cook a batch of chicken and keep it in the fridge to pull from during the day?

How do you cook it?

do you just eat the black Beans by themselves? I would think that would be a little hard to get down. Do you flavor them with anything?

I make a black bean Soup that I eat with reduced fat sharp cheddar and ff sour cream. My husband and kids love to eat it also, as well as my coworkers. PM me if you want the recipe.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
