What was the most difficult to get used to post-op?

Recommended Posts

In your experience, what was the most difficult thing to get used to after the surgery? My surgery is May 5th and I'm just trying to get all my questions out. Thanks y'all!

1. CHEWING a lot

2. TAKING SMALL BITES

3. CONTROLLING MENTAL HUNGER

Other than that, you feel surprisingly the same...especially before fills.

Good luck.

i forgot to say liquid DIETS! Might be #1 - it's the hardest and worst part but temporary.

I am eating just about everything. No stress... until he starts putting the saline in I guess. Didn't even have to mush up food after the 7 day liquid diet. It's only been a week but I am ready for a fill already. I doubt he will do it though.

Leaving food on my plate... understanding that when my stomach tells me I am done, I am done. I have had some painful sliming/PBing episodes because I tried to take one or two more bites when my stomach already said I was done.

Try to eat slowly especially if I am hungry.

So far, it's the liquid diet. I didn't think that the five day pre-op diet was all that tough, but it was definitely short term. My post-op full liquid diet is a different story. It began the day after surgery and will last for six weeks. I've made it for two weeks now and have exactly four weeks to go. Very, very tough. Giving up caffeine has been pretty tough too and I've got four more weeks of that to face as well.

I have 2, but they were short lived and I am past them now.

1. My left shoulder pain from pressure on my phrenic nerve lasted a very long time. I used pain Patches to ease the pain and it went away after some good weightloss.

2. Hairloss/thinning. No matter what I tried, and I tried everything, I lost a lot of hair. The hair is filling in nicely now.

I've heard of this as a side effect of not getting sufficient Protein after surgery, but am not aware of anything other than adequate protein to resolve the problem. Curious what other methods you used to reverse the Hair loss?

Thank you for the quick response. Was it finally just adequate Protein that resolved the problem or something else?

I don't think the Protein had anything to do with it.

I think my body was in shock from the rapid weightloss.

The first 75 pounds flew off with no effort on my part.

I also think it has much to do with the type of hair I have. My hair is baby fine and very straight. I used to have a lot of hair, but each strand is very fine. It is now driving me a little crazy with all the areas of shorter hair that is filling in, but at least I don't have so many areas where scalp is showing.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
