Good evening everyone

I am scheduled for my 2nd visit/nutritionist visit tomorrow afternoon. They called me today and told me to fast 4 hours prior to my appointment b/c I was going to do some metabolic testing. Does anyone know what this is? I was @ work at the time so it didn't dawn on me to ask her until later. So any insight would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

You breathe into this tube thing when they put a plug over your nose for about 10 min. They didnt tell me I needed to fast for it though :-/

When did you do that test? During the pre-op appointment?

the breathing into a tube with a plug over your nose is the Pulmonary test... I'm not sure what the metabolic testing is..the only time I had to fast was to have blood drawn. Good luck.. let us know what it is!!

It probably refers to a comprehensive metabolic profile (CMP). All of the chemical reactions in your body make up your metabolism. This series of tests (from one blood draw) shows how well your organs/organ systems are functioning. It's sort of a quick snapshot of the chemical processes going on in your body. It includes

  • blood glucose
  • Calcium
  • albumin
  • total Protein
  • sodium
  • potassium
  • bicarbonate
  • chloride
  • BUN
  • creatinine
  • liver function (ALP, ALT, AST, bilirubin)

Fasting in advance helps ensure accurate results.

I was supposed to do that with my nutritionist also but she kept forgetting to bring the machine with her. I was also told to fast for 4 hours before. Nean is right. You breathe into a tube and it tells you how many calories your body needs to function so they can tell you how much you need to eat to lose.

I went too my nutritionist visit today and the metabolic testing was just blowing thru a tube for 10 min. It was basically meant to tell me about my metabolism, and how many calories I should have per day. I did have to fast for abt 4 hours prior to the visit, but she still wasn't able to get an accurate reading so next month I do it again!

Thanks everyone for your help!

It's called an "indirect calorimeter". You'll fast for 12 hours prior and should've been told not to exercise the day prior and no caffine the morning of the appointment. You'll have to breathe normally into a mouth piece; your nose will be clamped shut(doesn't hurt) - you'll likely sit in a comfy chair and flip through a magazine while the test is run.

The reason for no food/caffine or exercise is that your NUT is trying to determine your resting calorie need at it's most essential level - exercise elevates your metabolism as does caffine and your body actively digesting food. Hope this helps.

Learn something new every day! I never had this test. I did, however, just have the complete metabolic panel done via blood test--after fasting.

It's so interesting to me how differently doctors approach the surgery and aftercare.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
