Just got banded April 23rd, 2010

Recommended Posts

I'm so glad I found this forum. I just got my band 4 days ago, and as excited as I was to get it (even paid my own hard earned cash to get it because insurance wouldn't cover it) I am now suddenly feeling very scared! I had to do the clear liquid diet for 3 days before surgery, and have been doing the liquid/pureed diet since surgery, and already I am having so many cravings. I am counting the days until I can eat "real" food. I feel just like I used to feel about a week into another failed diet attempt, except this time, I can't just say "to heck with it" and eat whatever I want.

I am so committed to this, but am scared about how I am feeling right now...

Someone please tell me that this will get better!!

It does get better as you go along. Unfortunately until your first fill you are running purely on willpower. Remember that the band is a tool. It's not going to cure your old habits. You will still have your cravings. You will still make mistakes once and awhile. This is a lifestyle change. And you have to begin to understand the difference between 'head hunger' and true hunger. Try your hardest to not give into those cravings and follow the plan that your doctor gave to you. You don't want to eat foods that you aren't ready for yet. If you do you take the chance of stretching your pouch or getting stuck (not fun). Right now it's all about healing. As your swelling continues to go down you will probably find yourself getting hungier. Yes it sucks. But if you stick to the plan you won't be sorry. And do not think of this as a diet. It's a lifestyle change, not a diet. If you make up your mind that you are going to do this then eventually your mind will start listening to you. Hang in there. You can do it. Keep yourself busy. And drink your fluids. Make sure that you are getting Protein supplements in especially on the liquid/mushies. Protein is what keeps you feeling full longer.

By the way CONGRATULATIONS!! Keep us posted on your progress.

It does get easier. I'm a self-pay patient, too. Seeing results help keep me motivated (and most people I'm sure). The wonderful thing about the band for me is that I can give into cravings on occasion and be *satisfied* with less than half of what I used to eat. Best of luck!

You are correct. Don't deprive yourself of the good things once and awhile. Reward yourself once and awhile for the hard work that you have accomplished. Like I keep saying. This isn't a diet.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
