Anyone with experience of this kind of stuck feeling - 3 days post op

Recommended Posts

I had surgery last Friday (3 days ago). Didn't sleep well last night as my shoulders are still in incredible pain. I attribute that to the surprise hernia repair.

My problem is that I feel like I have a Dorito stuck in my throat. I haven't had any solid food as I am being diligent about following post op instructions, but something felt like it was poking me all night right in the middle of my esophagus. Did any one else have this or hear of it? It is very painful and causes me a lot of missed sleep.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

I wonder if the tube they put down your throat during surgery may have irritated it and you're feeling that? I'd call the doctor's office and check with them - they are always your best source if you have any concerns.

Hope you are sleeping better.

Try using your pain meds for night time. You may just have an unusual gas pain too. I think it will pass. Try some gasX strips. It takes several to get relief so try that and see if it helps. If not, and you are still worried, try giving your doc a ring tomorrow... Hugs!!!!

Hi,

I had my band the same day as you. My throat is still sore from the tube and the back pain is from the gas. Gas x strips help a lot plus my dr said to take the pain meds and don't try to be brave. I know on day 2 I felt this way and couldn't sleep and was just uncomfortable most of the day. I tried a heating pad on medium on my back. It didn't take the pain away but I feel asleep and slept hard. Good luck to you... also to move the gas pain walk walk and walk some more and then walk more at least that is what they say. I started really passing it more on day 3 and today day 4. Does your stomach growl? I think it is the gas as I am not really hungry everytime it does that. Go figure.. good luck and I feel your pain! Thanks, Tera

Thanks for the thoughts and ideas on my problem. I did call the Dr's office and had a long conversation with my doc's MA. He said it is due to the stitch used to repair my "surprise" hernia. He advised me to take the pain meds to sleep - as I do and to keep taking deep breaths - even though it hurts. Also that if it hasn't resolved or at least improved by Thursday morning to call the office again as my doc is in that morning for clinic.

Mystery solved - at least for now.

Kiwi -

I'm glad you talked with your doc's office and got reassurance. I hope you feel better each day!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
