HELP 4 days post-op and I have questions

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

I am four days post-op today and I am HUNGRY!! I drink a Protein shake about every two hours. Last night, I was actually dreaming about food (how sad ). I never had this problem before. I also get up at night to drink a Protein Shake and Water. Is this normal? I'm I supposed to feel this hungry?

I have been trying to get my walking in, but I get tired very easily. Is this normal too? I went to the mall yesterday, and I had to walk very slow. By the time I got home, I was out! I am not even breaking a sweat with these little walks (and I do mean little), but they are taking a lot of energy out of me.

Oh yeah, one more thing...I have yet to have a bowl movement. My mother is concerned. I know the medication can make you constipated, but I don't even have the urge to go. Should I be worried? I appreciate any help that anyone can give. Thanks!!!

All sounds normal to me :-)

If you are worried about the bowel movement try a fibre drink or tablet with lots of Water, that will help.

As for the tiredness, well you have just been through a significant surgery so your body will take a bit of time to recover, just be gentle with yourself, another week and you will feel great.

As for the hunger, not great suggestions there, perhaps try some Soup or something of a slightly different temperature, flavour, texture - that might help the huger. Unfortunately, it will just take you brain a little while to adjust and once you get onto more solid food you should find that you are full longer.

All in all, I think you are doing great :-)

It took me about 6 months to get everything working right and my head in the right place so that I could honestly say that things were progressing well (I still lost lots of weight even when I was bad, and I still have bad days even a year on). I guess all I am saying is be gentle with yourself and take it easy - the months will start to fly by and the kilograms will start to drop - just rest easy now :-)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
