I'm only new to the forum and was banded on 14th April 2010. I have had this very sharp pain in my chest more to the left under my rib cage but does radiate accross to my right and around to my LH side of my back which seems to be getting more intense. I have been having Reflux tablets, mylanta, gas busters, you name it I'm trying it.

Prior to surgery I was a very big burper and find now when I do it absolutely kills. Any advice on how to get rid of this pain would be really appreciated, besides the pain I am going quite good and 11 days post op I would have thought this type of pain would be gone.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

Thanks

I had the same problem a week ago 4 weeks post op. The nurse at my doctors office told me put a heating pad on the spot that hurts and the heat will help release the trapped gas. I was feeling better with in an hour.

I know what you mean about the gas pain! My left shoulder is killing me today!!! I took 2 GasX a while ago... no better. I also used Icy Hot.. no good. On Friday, I had your same pain.. under my left ribs, stabbing!! I called the office. They said gas, and had I been drinking any milk products. I said I was drinking the Dannon Lite smoothies. They siad to cut it out, no milk products. You have to look at what you are ingesting. Last night i had 1/2 glass wine. Maybe that is what is causing this pain now? I do not know. No milk though!

Are you drinking milk products?.. or eating something made with milk??

Jen

Well, since I last posted... I tried the heating pad, and drinking some hot soup... no good! Guess I will take some more GasX, and maybe a nap. It really hurts!! It comes and goes, like contractions when you are in labor! Makes me cry out, and hubby gets worried! Will try a nap now... I am walking later with a friend. That is supposed to help too.

Hi Kendra & Jen, thanks for your posts. I have been using a heat pack everyday since surgery and find it relieves the pain whilst laying down but as soon as I am up and about the pain comes back.

Jen, as for the milk products that is a definite YES i have been having milk to try and relieve the burning pain, so tomorrow I will try NO milk products and see if that changes things.

I hope you are feeling better soon Jen, it is really a terrible feeling isnt it and I sure know why you have been in tears. Keep positive lets hope it only lasts a little longer.

Hope you feel better soon! I am doing well now. The next day i was fine, only minor pain, and none since then. I have also been walking a lot too, and staying away from milk products, straws, and cold drinks. Let us know how you are doing!

I was banded March 31 and had HORRIBLE gas pain for three weeks. I also was in so much pain I didn't drink nearly enough and ended up with an INSANELY painful urinary tract infection. The best thing for the gas pain is lots of walking, even if you don't feel like it, lay on the side that hurts with the heating pad on the pain. Don't be afraid to take pain meds if you were prescribed them, or ibuprofen at the very least to reduce inflammation. Gas X really didn't do much for me. I'm now 4 weeks post op and feeling great. I have lost 30lbs since I started my pre-op diet a week before surgery. I'm exercising daily and eating a WHOLE lot less than I ever thought possible. 1/2 cup of food 3 times a day and I'm good. You'll get there!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
