Death after Lapband!!

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone. I recently heard of someone who died shortly after the lapband. Has anyone else heard of such tragic stories of people dying from the lapband??!! I have been struggling with my weight for a long time and was seriously considering getting the lapband but now after hearing about this I am scared and having second thoughts. Please help!

Every surgery has the risk of death, BUT lapband is minimally invasive and is not considered a high-risk surgery. I wouldn't let the fact that someone died after lapband surgery stop me from getting lapbanded--you have no information about that person's other health issues anyway. Life is full of risks. People die all the time from automobile accidents and yet everyone still gets behind the wheel of a car. Don't psyche yourself out over this.

There is a possibility of death with every single surgery. Hell, there is a possibility of death every single day that we live. I wouldn't let one story out of BILLIONS to ruin your chances at a better life.

My doc have performed over 10,000 lap band surgeries and have not lost a patient. But if you are afraid. I suggest that you do not have it.

People have died from getting their wisdom teeth extracted, but that has not stopped those who need it done to continue with that procedure.

I have not died from it. I may have had a shorter life as morbidly obese as I was. I guess I will never know exactly how many years the weightloss will save for me.

I had my first surgery when I was 25. I was really freaked out about going under general anesthesia. I had heard of people dying during all types of surgery. I had the beginning stages of cervical cancer. I asked them If I got pregnant first and had surgery after I had the baby what would happen. They told me I would die before the child was 5. So, surgery it was. The lap-band was my 4th surgery. The first 3 surgeries were not optional. Lap-band may have saved my life or at least given me more years............

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
