schel 0 Posted November 14, 2005 Does anyone know what the purpose of the liquid diet is before surgery? Why couldn't you eat high Protein, low cal, low fat, low carb and low sugar diet instead of having to be limited to just liquids? Schel
NJChick 3 Posted November 14, 2005 I think it has something to do with the liver (fatty liver) and shrinking it. My doc let me eat until midnight the night before my surgery, no restricion what so ever. But after surgery I was on Clear Liquids for 2 whole loooooooong weeks then thick liquids for another week, now mush. So every doc's views are different. Are you doing the liquid diet now? banded_for_life 2 Posted November 14, 2005 You want to shrink your liver as much as you can prior to surgery and the liquid high protien diet accomplishes this. I had to be on it two weeks prior to my surgery. It is a toughy, but totally doable with the results that come after. Best of luck.
mousecrazy 2 Posted November 14, 2005 I am guessing they suggest liquids because there is no room for error...when you start trying to cntrol the amts of food, I don't know about you, but I might "fudge" a little here and there, and then....well, you know the rest of the story, or you wouldn't be considering lapband, right? I weirdly kinda enjoyed the challenge...it was hard, but I did it. Cindy
schel 0 Posted November 14, 2005 I am on the 14 day liquid thing, they suggested I purchase the program from www.med-diet.com Well the Protein pudding and the Protein shakes are ok. But the protien broth... I'd rather skip it and go without than drink it. Which isn't good, because, then I'm not getting my whole day of Protein I'm supposed to get. I have supplimented with 2 egg whites and a whole egg to make up for the protein content of the broth. It all works out to measure the same, as far as calorie's, fat, protein and carbs, (which are zero). Let me know if you think I should contact my Dr. to see if this is ok. Thanks, Schel
deenae53964 0 Posted November 14, 2005 Liquids is really important. I actually lost 26 pounds pre-operatively on the liquid diet. That's one heck of a kick start to your new you! Not everyone has that sort of success, but it is meant to shrink the liver so it's easier to move out of the way to make the band placement easier. It also shrinks the size of the stomach some, or so I was told. I hope this helps. And, although the Protein drinks are God-aweful...it's only temporary. I would maybe try something OTC like the Carnation Instant Breakfast (the CarbConscience type) or Low Carb Slim Fast shakes are pretty good, too. I got samples of powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury from my nutritionist which weren't that bad and I just ordered another Protein Drink ... the name escapes me at the moment... but it's fruit flavored and 50 grams of Protein per serving. That should make it a LOT easier to get the protein requirements in for the day. Hope this helps. Good luck!
schel 0 Posted November 15, 2005 I'm feelin' weak! I want to chew...thank goodness my family is home. I don't think I'd have the will power to avoid the fridge right now. Keep your eye on the goal, I will tell myself. Sometimes I feel like solid food is out of my sight. Thanks for all your "guyzez" support. I will be strong. Firecallie 2 Posted November 16, 2005 Schel, I know what you're going through and am going through it right now...IT SUCKS!!! I have found that it helps if I chew gum or if i chew something up and spit it out without swallowing it that helps also. Goodluck! You can do it!
