Still having problems after esphogous diliation, slippage? (long, but plz help!)

Recommended Posts

Hello all, this is really my first real post. I was banded on 06/05/09 and haven't really had too many problems until now. Two weeks ago it felt as if my band had tightened itself, I couldn't eat much at all, but could still handle liquids. Then, over a week ago, I could no longer handle any solids OR liquids. I throw up EVERYTHING. I had the worst reflux/heartburn I've ever had in my life, just from a sip of Water. One sip of water would cause that extreme pain for about 4 hours. I didn't think it had anything to do with my band, so I went to a GI specialist, he did an Upper GI and ended up having to stretch my esophagus bc it was swollen shut, and took a biopsy to see if I have berrits disease. I was able to hold down 2 glasses of water and 6 small shell noodles that night. But the next day my problems were back. I have not been hungry at all, and I have not been nauseated either. When I throw up it's just like my body is rejecting it, the water comes back up as a foam. I'm able to drink vitiman water/powerade a little bit easier than water (not much) but it comes flying out the other end shortly after! I cannot lay down without throwing something up, I have to sleep sitting up. Someone please help me! What could be wrong?!?!??

It sounds like a prolapse - where your stomach comes up through the band. I had that happen in MArch and had to have a new band put in. I would definitely go see your surgeon ASAP with issues like that. My surgeon said I needed surgery right away to prevent damage and the inability to put a new one in. I found out I had the prolapse on Friday and had surgery Monday. I was able to eat but had severe heartburn and continuosly burping up stomach acids after a fill. LUckily he was able to place a new band due to a lack of any significant inflammation or damage.

Yeah, I'm going to see my surgeon tomorrow, I'm scared to death! I've never been thru anything like this in my life, the GI specialist had NO bedside manner what so ever and explained nothing to me, and I don't know if he knew anything about the lapband and where it's supposed to be when he did the Upper GI. Thanks for the advice and story!

So I went and saw my surgeon today (God I love him!!!) He called the 'specialist' that ran the light down my throat and got the video and notes from him. Turns out the specialist didn't stretch my esophagus, he STRETCHED MY LAPBAND!! Dr. Crawford took out half a cc of Fluid and sent me to the hospital to have an upper gi done, after the removal of fluid it showed that liquid was going thru with absolutely no restriction. He told me to just get hydrated today, and try eating tomorrow. I go back and see him in two weeks. Dr. Crawford said that he didn't know what kind of longterm affects the stretching of the lapband is going to have because it's never happened before, so, we'll see what happens. I'm just SOO upset about it because before I saw the specialist I told EVERYONE I had the lapband...but he stretched it anyways.
