NEW to Dallas and looking for a lap band surgeon

Recommended Posts

Are there any Dallas/ Ft Worth Bandsters on this forum who have had good results from a Dallas Lap band surgeon? I am a self pay client, insurance wont cover me because my bmi is only 34.1 (boo hiss...)

But There are so many options in this area, I was just wondering if there were some that were better than others? Any places to avoid completely? Horror stories and glowing recommendations needed!! I am trying to get th eball rolling, but I am not sure where to even start!

Any help??

Thanks

Andrea

Hi Andrea -

I would recommend Dr. Adam Smith in Fort Worth. He is a great surgeon who performed my banding last month. The fantastic and unique thing about Dr. Smith is that he is also a lap band patient. He was banded a few years ago and knows exactly how the patients feel since he is also going through the process.

I am not familiar with the staff in Fort Worth since my surgery was not performed there. We are lucky here in New Mexico because now Dr. Smith travels to ABQ one week a month to perform surgery and fills. The staff here in NM is fantastic!

I have heard that if you are self pay it costs around $9900 to be banded by Dr. Smith in Texas.....it is around $15K for the same surgery here in NM with Dr. Smith.

I really wish you luck in your Quest to find a surgeon. You will really have to feel comfortable with your surgeon and the staff since this isn't a one time interaction. You will be seeing the surgeon that you choose pretty much for the rest of your journey since they will be performing your fills. Oooh.. here in NM he always performs fills using fluoroscopy....you will find this to be an advantage over not using that method. You will have to check about the fill method in Texas, but I think that it is the same.

You take care and good luck to you!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
