help! can't eat enough

Recommended Posts

These protien shakes make me just ill, and I am one week post op. They were no prob before but now I just can't stand the smell of taste. Everytime I get up and walk around for more then 3 or 4 minutes I get sweaty and shakey. Please please I need some suggestions about something palateable to eat, and why I am getting these sweating episodes...

I tried Protein Shakes to get ready for surgery and thought I was set. After surgery 10 days ago I couldn't even keep sips of Water down. I became dehydrated and had to go to hospital to get Fluid (light headed, vomit, cold) My doc had me sip using a spoon and that helped. I found special K Protein water. It is taste just like crystal light but with 5 grams of protein in it. I am up to 32 oz a day I need to get 64.

The sweating and shaking can be symptoms of low blood sugar. If you can't tolerate the Protein Shakes now..try again later after you're done healing. There's not alot on the list for 1wk post op...sounds like you're on reg liquids if you're allowed Protein drinks. At that point I was eatting things like runny cream of wheat, creamy Soups, Jello, popsicles, yogurt. Once you get to the mushie stage you will start to feel better.

There are some protein drinks that look and taste more like juice. nectar has alot of flavors you might tolerate better.

Throw something in the blender.

A few days post-op I was super shaky and I put some chicken/veggie Soup in the blender so there were no chunks and ate it like that. I literally felt better 10 minutes later because I got some Protein in my system.

One of my favourite foods (even a year post-op) is straight up spaghetti/meat sauce (Pasta and I don't get along). For you, you could make it extra saucy, add in some mozza cheese and ground beef obviously and throw that in the blender? Make sure there's enough sauce to keep it from being too thick though. I know it doesn't sound great to put something in the blender but really, you'll feel better once something is in your system.

I'm that person who didn't drink a Protein shake after I was banded because I had to drink them 2 weeks before surgery and I literally can't handle the smell or taste anymore... even now!

I also reached the point that I couldn't stand the smell, my nutritionist recommended that I add extract to the shakes - sometimes, I'd add vanilla, almond or orange to my chocolate and vanilla shakes and it really helped.

Also, ask your Dr if you can add some creamy Soup to your diet. In moderation, once every other day or so, I'd treat myself to cream of crab soup - yes, with the Dr's blessings...

In addition, I'd send DH out to the local vietnamese restaurant to buy soup and I'd strain it and drink the wonderful broth.

Hope this helps.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
