Anybody have to wear compression stockings?

Recommended Posts

When I went to the LB education class last week we were told that we would be sent home with compression stockings and that we would need to wear them 20 out of 24 hours a day for 6 weeks! The stockings are knee-hi and white.

I don't mind wearing them while I'm home, but I will be banded in May (most likely) and that's flip-flop weather. And I hate the feeling of stocking around the calves of my legs when I have pants on. And I'm worried about being over-heated with them on.

So, did anyone else have to wear stockings after surgery and for how long? Were they uncomfortable or hot?

I wore mine during surgery and probably for about a day and a half following surgery. They suggested I try to keep them on at least through the night following surgery. I have not heard of anyone having to wear them for 6 weeks after surgery so I wouldn't be overly concerned. Even if you do have to wear them for 6 weeks, they can't be more uncomfortable than the extra weight you are carrying right?! That would have to be the way I would have looked at it, its a small sacrifice to make in order to get healthy.

Oh and to answer your question regarding the stockings being uncomfortable or hot, I did not really find them to be very uncomfortable, except perhaps for the elastic part at the very top which was tight at times. The material was very thin and let air through so I did not have any issues with them being to hot. However it was January and very cold when I had my surgery and the weather in May will be much warmer so that is something to consider. Anyway, good luck on your journey!!

Good deal! I don't mind wearing them while I'm home but outside is a little much. I'm not telling anyone at work that I'm having the surgery so showing up with funky white stockings would raise eyebrows and start the rumor mill at full speed....especially since I'm a flip-flops in the middle of winter kind of girl.

Just waiting for it to all be submitted to insurance and getting approved now.

Like SIL, I had the leg massage things on, but only during surgery, and they were placed on over my compression stockings. After surgery the compression stockings stayed on, the massage things came off. Good luck and I hope you have a speedy approval!

That's what I had 7 weeks ago also. They were put on before surgery and removed completly the next morning.

Nothing sent home with me, just my instructions to keep moving.

WEAR THE STOCKINGS:smile2: 2 years ago I broke my foot and the doctor told me to take it easy for a few days. So I laid in bed for a couple of days nursing my boo boo. The next thing I knew I was in the hospital and a doctor was telling me I could die. I ended up having a DVT and pulmonary embolism. By laying around like I did I developed a blood clot in my calf. When I got up and started moving around the blood clot started breaking apart and ended up in my lungs. So I am sure I will be wearing my compression stockings whether my surgeon tells me to or not. It would suck to go through all this and end up dying with and embolism a few days later. Just my opinion.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
