Question about gas pain? Please help

Recommended Posts

I have heard that after surgery it is normal gassy. I had my surgery 6 days ago and did not really feel gas pains at first but for the past 2 days I have been in so much pain because I feel like I have alot of gas but can't seem to get it out. I even took some gas-x and it helped a little but after a few hours I felt the pressure again. Is this normal and what can I do to feel better. Sometimes it feels like my stomach growling and sometimes it feels like gas so I can't tell the difference but it hurts and is uncomfortable.

One thing that helped me, besides Gas X was to get up and walk around a bit. Seems when I was sitting or laying down, the gas pains were worse. I also drank small sips of Coke to make me burp (excuse me! lol), but I know alot of doctors say no carbonation so it's not something I'd recommend. My doctor doesn't care about carbonation luckily.

While it is painful (the gas), it does go away eventually. Best wishes!

Walking was the only thing that helped me.

ALso, I remember feeling those horrible hunger pains - the ones that wake you up in the middle of the night.

I remember drinking a McDonalds milk shake in the evening, it usually soothed my tummy enough to not wake me in the night!

You may try it. I would limit myself to one a day.

Good luck!

I had severe gas pains the day after the surgery. It looked like I was 10 months pregnant. The gas was worse then the surgery. For two days post op I was miserable. I think that the gas is normal. They have to pump in co2 to move your organs around when they do the surgery. I know that sitting in a rocking chair and rocking helps. I ended up taking some milk of magnesia for the gas in the colon. But the free gas in the abdominal cavity has to be absorbed by the body. Hang in there it will get better. kathy

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
