Family Experience, very valuable advice

Recommended Posts

Australians!

This is for you especially, we are lacking in numbers!

I write on behalf of my dad, sister and I who all have a lap band. With over 8 years experience, we know what were doing at this point, well we hope so, I'm the newest only 4 months in, my dad is 8 years in and sister is 5 years in, they both are at their target weights and maintain them successfully.

Just some tips - from my family (we are well experienced) -

1. In the morning it is always going to be difficult to eat, so try tea! Mint tea is the best, something with some sugar with ensure that you get some energy for a few hours

2. Eat regularly, but small meals.

3. Under any circumstances, do NOT drink when you are eating.

4. Stay away from bread!

5. Do not eat soggy Cereal, it will form a sloppy paste in your stomach.

6. Fish is your friend, salmon is amazing, filling and so healthy.

Just think of your band as a funnel, if you do not break down food how is it going to go down? Ensure your chew, do not drink when you eat! If you put solids down a funnel and then liquids you get a bubbly effect, exactly the same thing with lap band the bubbly feeling is you getting stuck. And ensure you pace yourself.

This is my opinion! Many years of experience have lead my to learn so much, no doubt there are occasions where I do get stuck. Just remember not to freak out!

I hope this helps with some issues, feel free to add foods and tecniques that you have learnt

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
