Hello! icon7.gif

Boy am I new to all of this! My name is Schel and I am 9 days before surgery. I have been on liquids for 7 days now and having a tough time of it today. I'd love to CHEW something but I do not want to risk not having the surgery, because I have waited a LONG time to get where I am today. There now I feel better about that! (not that I could chew anything at this point anyways, I've had 2 root canals in the last 2 weeks, and go for a crown to finish it this week.)

I started out three an a half years ago researching Gastric Bypass. I was introduced to the concept of the Lap Band at a informational class I attended while doing my research. Not totally decided on RNY or Lap Band, I had all of my "classes" (Psych, dietary consult, etc...) out of the way. My mother at the time had just had RNY and I became very ill with Guillain-Barre Syndrome, Miller Fisher Variant. What is that you ask? A very RARE neurological disorder in which my face became totally paralized and my bowels and nerves in my body pretty much shut down. Anyone wondering what GBS is you can read more at

Anyways, after years of recovery my answer to which surgery was very clear to me. LAP BAND! I don't think a Vitamin defiency with the RNY which I see and hear a lot of people have is a very good choice for me. And after research I feel this is a much healthier version for weight loss surgery.

So... My surgery date is November 22nd 2005 at 9:30 AM at Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis MN with Dr. Michael Schwartz.

I am very excited and look foreward to meeting many new "bandster" friends and improving my life. I also plan on enjoying my 6 year olds "growing up" years.

Well that about sums it up in a nut shell. Hope to chat with many of you in the future. Good Luck to all!

Schel from Big Lake MN.

Hello!

All is going well. I'm 2 and 1/2 weeks post op. The band is in and gallbladder is out. I've progressed to my soft diet without any problems and am very glad I chose lap band. I would recommend it to anyone over and over again.

Thanks for everyone's support. It means the world to me.

Schel

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
