OUCH!!! Hard to find Low Profile Port

Recommended Posts

Hey all!,

I was banded on 3/10/10. I had my 1st fill on last week 04/06/10 and it was sooo :eek:PAINFUL!! My Dr. had a difficult time finding my port even while using an ultrasound. He was able to see it (slightly) but he just couldnt access it. So after being "pressed" on and "poked" for what seemed like 100 times for 30 minutes, he finally sent me to radiology to have my fill using a fluoroscope. I was "supposedly" filled with 5cc by the radiology Dr. and I was in pain for like 2 days after that experience. I wasnt feeling any restriction so I went again on yesterday 04/12/10 for my 2nd fill and the same thing happened except with less pokes this time....Come to find out when the radiology Dr. did my 1st fill 2cc leaked back out when he extracted the needle (and I felt it run down my side) and I wasnt at a full 5cc. I believe I was at 3.5 or somewhere around there. My Dr. did the fill this time and he assured me that there is 5.5cc in there. Has anyone else had a problem with a hard to locate low profile port?? With 2 painful FILL experiences I am not at all excited  about going in for my fills!!!!

Ouch...sorry to hear that. My doctor mentioned swapping my port out for a low profile (or as he likes to call it a "gucci" port) when I'm smaller and it becomes more noticeable...and when there's less fat to get thru I assume. LOL! Unfortunately, if it's been like that the first 2 times, I think it might not get better until you lose a little more weight. I hope you are close to your sweet spot and don't need another fill anytime soon! I've never had a flouro-fill, but my doc always pulls all the liquid that's in there out to make sure what's supposed to be in there is in there before putting it back. Then he adds the additional fill amount. I've been lucky with my doc hitting it the first try everytime.

Good luck to you!

Crystal

Hi SwissMiss,

Welcome to the board! Looks like this is your first post.

I don't have anything to offer you advice wise, just wanted to say OUCH! Hopefully it will get better as you lose weight and the port become easier to access.

Best wishes to you!

Hey there!!!

I was banded 8/20/2009!! And my first fill was a nightmare. So do not feel bad. They could not find my port, I too was poked and pressed on for 45 min then they restricted me too much and I passed out!!! Horrible.

Now my surgeon has mandated that I have to go under Flouro to locate it everytime. It is just a normal thing for me. Even with Flouro I am sore for at least 3-5 days after.... I guess I am just sensitive that way. I normally take a little bit of liquid Tylenol about 30-45 min before my fill then go home and rest after... it helps!! I hope that it gets better for you.... I will be cheering you on!!!:)

Thanks Ladies for all of your responses and warm welcomes :(!! I hope no one has to ever go thru what i've been thru..

@crystal525... I do believe I am at my "sweet spot" now.. I think:confused:.

@battlekat1970.. Thanks for that suggestion. I think ill start taking a pain medication before i go in for a fill and afterwards. The bruising and pain after is horrible!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
