You're 19 - Right? You still live at home so I assume your parents support you; you're probably in college? If that's the case, you can be covered by your parent's insurance until you're age 23 or no longer defined as a full time student. With health care reform, insurance carriers will not be able to deny coverage for pre-existing conditions - when these changes take effect in 2013-14.

If you're working, you generally have the option to enroll in your employers insurance plan. There may be a six month waiting period for specific types of coverage within the plan, but you'd still have coverage for the major issues - serious accident or disease.

Why don't you go to NAHU - Consumer Information - Find an Agent to find an insurance agent in your area. They will help you determine what your needs are and what you can afford, and what is available in the New York area. I'm an agent in Colorado and all I know is that NY state has the weirdest insurance laws around, so you really want someone who is familiar with New York's insurance regulations.

Good luck!

Okay - since you are still in high school, still living under your parents roof, you are their dependent, so I believe it would be next to impossible to obtain your own insurance coverage at this point in time.

I have Cigna through my husband's employer, and it paid for everything. They required me to be on a diet for 6 months before they would approve.

Erin

Here's a ton of info - check out www.health.state.ny.us

Children's Medicaid or Child Health Plus not an option because of your age, but you might be able to seek coverage under the "Age 29" option or Medicaid.

You can find out more about qualifying for Medicaid by going to you local dept of social services. There's also another option from the state called Family Health Plus.

The description from the website is below:

Family Health Plus is a public health insurance program for adults who are aged 19 to 64 who have income too high to qualify for Medicaid. Family Health Plus is available to single adults, couples without children, and parents who are residents of New York State and are United States citizens or fall under one of many immigration categories.

Family Health Plus provides comprehensive coverage, including prevention, primary care, hospitalization, prescriptions and other services. There are minimal co-payments for some Family Health Plus services. Health care is provided through participating managed care plans in your area.

I hope this helps - check out the website and give your local social service office a call -Clinton County DSS - 13 Durkee Street, Plattsburgh, New York 12901-2911, (518) 565-3300

I don't think living at home makes you a dependent. Its just a matter of whether or not your parents claim you as a dependent on their taxes. If you do not want to be tied to their salary and they aren't willing to pay for your medical insurance, then ask them to stop claiming you as a dependent on their taxes.

Yep, they'll need to stop claiming you as a dependent if they're not willing or able to provide coverage to you. (Do they have a policy you could be added to? Maybe they would be willing to do so if you paid the difference in premiums; that might end up being less costly than purchasing your own coverage, and it may provide more coverage than you can afford on your own.)

Failing that, I would strongly recommend that you look into the info Jax provided--it sounds like your best bet.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
