6 days post-op and I'm starving!!!!

Recommended Posts

Hello Everyone,

First, I cannot tell you how thrilled I am to finally be writing this! I have waited for what has felt like forever since I made the decision to get WLS.

I am 6 days post -op and this is the first day I finally feel much better. Prior, I had a lot of gas pain in my diaphragm which radiated to my shoulder. I could hardly breath much less walk. Anyway, I have been drinking Water, clear broths, Decaf teas, diet Snapple, etc... and I am starving.

So, I took a nibble of some cheesecake we had left over from Easter - nothing happened, so I took another nibble and no dumping or nausea or pain. I have since stopped - don't want to press my luck. I am very hungry and would love to eat something real, but I am afraid. I guess I took the nibble of cheesecake - my favorite, out of habit. I am shocked that nothing happened.

Has anyone else experience this? How did you handle the hunger during the 7 days after surgery when you can't eat? I have two days left before I get moved to "soft food" and I am going out of my mind. Thank you!:)

If your doctor permits it try cream of chicken Soup. I also had Cream of Wheat with Splenda on top. My husband shared a baked yam with me about a week out of surgery. Just take it real easy and slow..... Oh and get in your Protein and fluids. That's really important. I added unflavored Protein Powder to my Cream on Wheat. Take care and best wishes!!

Hello, I am 16 days Post Op. and I understand the starving I feel I almost went crazy by that time. I ended up adding Yogurt and I did break down on day 6 and scrambled and egg and eat it slow. I found that helped a lot. Also my girlfriend who had the surgery told me to try spoon full of Peanut Butter and lick it and let it melt on my tongue. That took the edge of a whole lot. hope this helps

I am shocked that nothing happened.
Kind of anticlimactic, huh?

As a rule, people with bands do not dump--at least not by the same mechanism as those with other weight loss surgeries. (Lots of us do "dump" in response to sugar, but it's different.) I don't think that most of us experience nausea in response to most foods, either.

And once the postoperative swelling is down (if it even was substantial enough to be felt), most of us don't have anything resembling restriction. So pain is not something we'd expect, especially after a tiny nibble.

So, it's understandable that you felt nothing---there wasn't much to feel! This will change as you approach restriction after a fill or three (or four). In the meantime, yes----starvation is a way of life! It's really hard, but your weight loss, at this point, is 100 percent dependent on your choices.

Step away from the cheesecake! :)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
