Shoulder PAIN...how long?

Recommended Posts

I am now 2 weeks post op...I am still having shoulder pain...I was told it was from the anesthesia. Am I alone in this pain? It hurts mainly when I take a deep breathe...it has progressively gotten better but it has now dropped down to my side (acting like a catch just below my ribs on the same side as the shoulder - so it hurts in two spots now)...the pain meds help me but I am tired of taking them (I only take them to sleep at night now)...just curious if anyone has had this issue at all?

My surgeon told me the pain could come and go for up to a month.

I believe it's from the gas the surgeon uses to inflate the tummy while doing surgery.

In the meantime, I found walking and a heating pad applied to the area helped.

I hope you feel better soon.

Yeah I use a heating pad EVERY night as I fall asleep...it works great...just want it to stop...not fun.

I was banded on 11/30 and still get the shoulder gas pains. Especially after a fill they creep back up on me for some reason. However, they are never as instense as they were after surgery and don't last nearly as long. Good luck!

I am 3 days post op and my shoulder pain started the moment I woke from the anesthesia. I spoke to my nutritionist today and she said exactly what everyone else is saying...its from the air they use to inflate your stomach during surgery. She said it shouldn't last long. Ugh!

Try liquid Mylanta. Make sure the active ingredient is simethicone at least 20-40mg. It really does work and the bloated feeling in your stomach that you have, or will soon get, it helps a lot with that to. Also the nurse told me that if the heating pad to the shoulder that hurts does not work try putting it on your side. That it could be a gas bubble trapped on your side putting pressure on things.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
