Need some advice from dads

Recommended Posts

I am 4 days into my pre-op diet and doing well. My surgery is scheduled for the 14th of April. I am looking forward to feeling better and loosing weight. But we just found out my wife is pregnant! Now I feel guilty about having the surgery because I am paying for it and loosing weight while she is gaining seems kind of mean. I wanted some advice from some dads to tell me if what they think.

You want to be healthy for the new child on the way right? Seems like a no brainer, I gained 20 sympathy pounds with each of my 5 kids, now I have to strugle with the weight loss. I say do it she will understand.

Start losing now, then when the baby gets here you will have lots more energy to help her. I promise this will be worth gold to her! Plus I guarantee she wants this new baby to have its Dad around for a long time. Just remember, pregnant wives need lots of reassurance during the pregnancy that you are still attracted to her.

Sorry for sneaking in the mens room, I will leave now. :bored:

Do it now, this will be a good year, new baby and a new healthy dad. I think your wife will understand. I have my own business and dont make money if Im not working. My wife told me we'll get through this and be alot better for it. My wife was explaining to my kids about the surgery(5-6 year old boys)and my 6 year old said he's happy because "if we lose daddy we"ll lose our house too". That made any doubts I had go away. And if your wife gains baby weight it will help motivate her also!

The main reason I did this is because my mom died alot sooner than she should have. It was definitely the hardest thing I've ever gone through. Its been 6 years(March 4th) and hasnt seemed to get any easier! I used to look at my kids and wonder why I couldnt find the will power to change, sometimes I feel like I got worse out of sympathy for myself. I did this a month ago and lost 37#. Im off my bp meds. I cant tell you how much better I feel all around. It was so unhealthy and stressful to wonder when I was going to have a heart attack, I really believed in my head that If I didnt change I wouldnt make it out of my 40s(Im 38). Thats really no way to live life. Since doing this I can tell you I dont feel that way at all. Even though Ive just begun my journey I feel like Ive come a long way already. I can look at my kids and have every reason to believe I will be able to do so for a long long time! I really didnt know how bad I felt until looking back now. I guess my point is do it now, its never to soon to get healthy. Besides(assuming this is your first), your life will get alot more hectic and busy!

Thanks for all of the advice. I can't wait for my surgery date to get here, "and the baby too".

Just had to comment, YES DO IT NOW! If I had to do it over again, I would have done it years ago. My kids are now 19, 21, 24 and I have much more energy than when they were little. I missed out on so much of thier lives because of my weight. I simply could not do alot of things back than that I can do now so many years later.

Hi - this is my first post - couldn't resist topic. I'm 46, a stay-at-home dad (4 y.o. boy, 20 month old girl), bmi 36. Our house is always on the verge of chaos, and recently my mother became ill with cancer and I'm the go-to person re: her medical issues. I'm scheduled for 4/26 (two days from now) and going ahead with the surgery. There will never be a perfect time and my kids need me healthy and I'm afraid of losing momentum. Maybe its selfish, but it could be "constructively selfish". With regard to the pregnancy (congratulations!), its only going to get tougher for you to take the time for yourself. I'd love to know what you decided and how you're doing. Good luck!

I went through with it. I was banded on 4-14-10. I've lost 25lbs so far with the pre and post op diet. I'm glad it did it. I'm looking forward to my first fill so I can get some restriction.

I concur with Ziggle Dog. I found out today that I have been approved. I was very gun hoe about doing this when I started the appointments etc. but the last few weeks I have began to have second thoughts. That is until I started to think about the things I cant and dont do b/c of my weight. I am going to do it now for a few reasons: my kids, my wife, my health and myself... those are reason enough for nme to take the trek into the unknown and do it.

When I was in the 3rd grade my parents divorced and I sat around all summer trying to fill that empty void with food. I gained almost 80lbs, I am scared to not have my emotional crutch but my family means more.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
