Hang in there. It gets easier after a couple of days. Your liver will start releasing stored glycogen for energy, and you'll be comfier physically.

The preop diet really is the hardest part of it all, IMO. You can get through it--and then, it's all downhill.

The first three days are the hardest. I wanted to bang my head against the wall to stop the horrible hunger pains and headaches. I wasn't sure that I was going to make it!

Once I hit day 4 or 5 I didn't really have any hunger at all. I actually had to remember to drink the shakes everyday. My energy came back and the headaches finally stopped.

You can do it! Just stick to it and you will feel better in just a couple of days!

Good luck!

I am on day two also. Today hasnt been as bad as yesterday. I still have a headache, but I am feeling less hungry. I am coping by walking, cleaning, and sleeping. I am lucky to be on Spring Break so I am trying to sleep in, that way there is less time to be hungry! When I feel a hunger pain, I drink some crystal light. It has been my best friend so far. Only 12 more days to go....wow that seems like so far away!!

Do you get to do the full medifast? I did, it includes a lean and green meal each day.

That kept me from going bonkers and helped with the headaches. Actually getting to chew each day really helped. I went through two days before I read the instructions and realized I could have some meat and veggies.

The day of my surgery, I was down 8 lbs. and my surgeon told me he could tell I had stuck to it as my liver was nice and small. He said that made the surgery very easy for him to perform. That made it all worth it!

I am suppose to do two shakes and the a lite dinner of meat and veggies.

Did you snack? Veggies? Almonds? I'm afraid by the time I get to eat dinner I am going to eat too much if I am too hungry. Gosh, I have no will power and it is frustrating at this stage.

I am getting really worried that I am going to screw it all up once I do get the band. I have wanted this for so long and now I can't even seem to be comfortable with the before stage. I really thought I was in the right mindset for this. The good thing is I haven't cheated...bad thing is it only been 2 days.

I'm so whiny!! LOL

I could not do the shakes, So I went all high Protein and green veggie. So far I have lost 10 lbs. I also checked with a trainer as well as a nutritionist who both told me that either shake or protein will give the same effect. I had the same withdrawls from sugars, carbs and caffiene and a headache that lasted 5 days! Good luck to all!

Wow, 2 shakes and 1 lean and green? Yeah, I'd be whiny AND grumpy!

I did 5 medifast products and the lean and green. I had a limit of either 1 or 2 bars per day (can't quite remember which). I was not allowed to snack other than the medifast stuff.

I'll say it was not gourmet, but it got the job done and I got my band. As of a couple of weeks ago, I am at a normal BMI.

You can do it!! You can come here and whine, we all understand!

Right now I'm doing a total liquid diet with Optifast with only 5 shakes a day. I have no pity for those who get to eat food!!! lol

Water is and will be your best friend. Water does fill me up. Also, Crystal Light is great for water. Make sure you get a ton of water! Trust me.

One thing that helped me was egg drop Soup. I would add extra chicken broth to it and it was very tasty. I had it every night during my pre-op diet along with Protein shakes during the day.. my doctor said my liver was perfect!

I know each doctor has their own diet.. but the egg drop Soup from my favorite Chinese restaurant was definitely what got me through!

Good luck!!

Thanks to everyone for the advice. I woke up this morning feeling a little more confident about all this then I did yesterday. I am sure I will have my ups and downs, but the way I feel this morning, I know I can do this! Cue the Rocky theme!!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
