Hi! I was banded yesterday and Im home now. Im really sore and in some pain but the meds are helping with the pain. I keep reading about the gas pains but I have not felt the gas pains at all. When does it normally start? Im passing gas but Im in no pain from it. Should I be expecting it or would I already of had some sort of gas pain? All I can say is that Im so excited to finally have the surgery part over with!!! :)

I have been having the dreaded "gas pains" it is the feeling like you need to burp in a really big way and simply can't. The pressure can sometimes feel unbearable. It eventually goes the other direction, just takes longer.

Some people also experience "gas pains" from the carbon dioxide that the surgeon puts into your abdomen so that he can do the laproscopic procedure. This pain is much different and will eventually be absorbed by your body and removed when you exhale. The pain is sometimes up under your diaphram and refers up into your shoulder. It is usually sharp in nature and can be intense. The best way to get rid of both is to walk, walk, walk.

I had the gas pain in my shoulder and it didn't really show up until about 4-5 days after surgery. I was banded on a Wed and went back to work on the following Monday and that was the first time I really felt it. Walking def helps and I also when able to used a heating pad wrapped around my shoulder.

My experience was the same as TODD NYG's. Just went away on its own after about 5 days--but my upper chest and shoulders really hurt!

Good luck with everything!

I had a similar experience to Todd and mjbf. I didn't really have gas pains until 4 or 5 days later. I felt it mostly in my right shoulder. My surgeon said that some people experience pains for up to a month. They aren't awful but they can get your attention. Like Todd said, heat and walking helps.

Maybe you'll be one of the lucky ones who never experiences this.

Wishing you the best in your healing process. It's tender, loving care time!

You will probably feel it about 1 to 2 days after surgery. when I got home it wasnt until the day after that I started to feel the pain from the gas. It was horrible! that was actually the worst part about the surgery. The gas traveled to my back, up my neck, shoulders and it was painful I had some pills called gas-x but it didnt work, what did work was walking..so walk, walk, walk..otherwise you will regret it. Hope this helps and good luck!

I was banded on this past Monday and really did not feel it until Wed. Walking does help but take it easy as you want to walk but do not have the energy to go that far. I just cannot wait until it goes away.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
