I was too scared of the potential consequences (i.e. my surgery being cancelled) to even think about cheating. However, I did somewhat cheat. I didn't take out the mushrooms or broccoli in my cream of mushroom or broccoli cheese Soups or the tiny bits of fruit in my yogurt. That was the furthest I was willing to go though, lol. I only had a two week liquid diet and that was honestly one of the hardest things I've ever done. I had some really tough days, but you know what? Its all worth it in the end. Just keep thinking of why your doing this and what you want in the end. It may be motivating when you see some weight loss during the next two weeks as well. Good luck and I'm sure you'll do fine!

I am on day 6 of 14... and the first three days were the hardest... hang in there... day 4 and on isn't as bad! Hmmm and yes I cheated by eating a hard boiled egg. I was light headed and thought it was good nutrition w/some sodium added... that was a mistake... learned my lesson... lol

My doc says if you feel weak or lightheaded it is likely from the lack of sodium, since our pre band life of prepackaged, high processed foods was full of sodium; they recommend one bullion cube in a cup of Water a day to help... They also say that you can have an additional one if you start to get a headache and I have found that it really does work with the shakiness I sometimes get and the headache I got day 4 went poof after a mug of beef broth...

Hugs,

Heather

What you should do is stick with the diet. It is time-limited, and you can do it.

If you really can't, call your doctor to find out what you can safely add. You want to be sure your liver is given the opportunity to rid itself of its glycogen stores, so it's important to eat in a certain way.

ETA: Yes, lots of people do cheat. Some of them find, after their abdomens have been opened for surgery, that their doctors are not able to proceed with the surgery. You don't want that! Make sure that you make wise choices--including calling your doctor if you think you need to modify the diet.

I was on the Optifast 800 cal diet 14 days prior to surgery. I did not cheat, not even once.

Because of that my surgery went smoothly, I lost 16 lbs prior to surgery and my surgeon was absolutely thrilled that I stuck to it.

It is only 14 days, and believe it or not it is a head game. You have to determine that you are going to do this and get it done.

Think of it this way, after you are banded you have to still stick to a 'diet' for the band to work and for you to be healthy. It is a tool and nothing more, if you abuse it you will gain.

So get back in that ring and fight Rocky!! YOU can DO this!!!

I am also on the Optifast 800 calorie diet for 2 weeks. I'm on day 6 and have lost 13 pounds already. I have cheated a little bit. I've eaten two pickles, lol. Make sure you drink a ton of Water. That is helping me with my hunger. I'm not really hungry anymore. I just have cravings, and it's only in my head.

My wife will start her preop diet tomorrow...Optifast. It will be a learning experience to see how she handles it. I'm hoping it will help me when I go through it.

That's how I felt, Anne. I was so grateful that the surgery was really going to happen that I wasn't willing to compromise that in any way. Even though my preop diet fell during the holidays!

today is my last day. tomorrow is surgery day. honestly the closest i've gotten to cheating is eating tomatoes and carrots. i just had to be on a low carb/fat diet. i promise you though, the two weeks will FLY by. i can't believe how quickly it has gone for me. you really can do it!! i know it seems like a struggle now, but after a few days it will get so much easier!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
