Post-Op Heartburn/Acid Reflux?

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone! This is my first post to your forum. I have been approved for surgery and am waiting for my psyche eval/dietitian appt. Will be having surgery hopefully in the next 4-5 weeks.

I have SEVERE acid reflux. So severe. I am on meds that control it very well. I have dealt with it since I was little.

I understand that some people find that their heartburn/reflux completely disappears after getting the lapband, as it actually acts as if you have had the "Nissan Fundiplication" surgery (where your esophagus is banded with part of your stomach to keep reflux down) that actually fixes the acid reflux issue. So, I am PRAYING that I get to kill TWO ugly birds with ONE stone. But, I know everyone is different.

I would like to know from those that suffer/ed from severe acid reflux BEFORE the surgery, how are you doing now with the reflux?

Thanks!

Jenn

I had real bad Acid Reflux prior to surgery as well...I was also on medication, and have been for years...I am 3 weeks post op and haven't had one episode of heartburn or reflux, and I stopped taking the meds the day before surgery...so yes, so far, so good... good luck..

I had a hiatal hernia and was on Nexium for bad heartburn. Of course, my doctor fixed the hiatal hernia during surgery. I don't know if your problem is similar.

The last pill I took was the day before surgery, and I have had absolutely no heartburn. Of course I had just paid $50 for a new 90-day supply.

I have a friend who had the sleeve, and he had a lot of heartburn. I guess each has its pluses and minuses.

Well I am the opposite. Before surgery I had a sensitive stomach, but not acid reflux probs. I am now 9 months post op and for the last 3 months I have had the WORST heartburn ever!!! The RX they gave me dont really help. They tried taking out Fluid thinking i was too tight, but ddint work. Who knows...I just keep my meds close by and use them alot. The reflux gets worse if I lay down within an hour of eating or drinking a lot so dont do that. Good luck!

I have never had acid reflux before. Apparently when my surgeon went in, he found a hiatal hernia and repaired it. Now I have very bad heart burn (not so much burning, but pain like knives). If I drink anything more than a 1/2 cup of Water or Fluid. I'm still on Clear Liquids and can't wait to drink milk to counteract this.

I'm thinking about taking Tums.

It's awful!

I started before surgery with severe acid reflux on Nexium. For about 2 weeks post op, my reflux was terrible. I was even taking Tums which I never had to do before surgery. I told my husband that if it didn't get better soon I was getting this thing taken out. After about 2 weeks, it disappeard and has been fine since. I still take my Nexium and prob always will.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
