Exercise Routines

Recommended Posts

Can anyone suggest a good exercise routine please? I was going to try to do the 30 minutes on the treadmil each day with a speed of 3.6 to 4.0 and an incline of 4 to 6. Anyone have any good suggestions? Thank you.

Well, that's how I started pretty much and it worked!

I "ran" on the treadmill at 4.0 and a small incline, it was a very slow jog but it built up my running muscles, lol, so that eventually I was able to run outside. I'm not sure walking would have been quite the same.

I think walking is a great way to start. Typically, it is recommended that people aim to get their heart rate up for about 30 minutes on most days of the week. Work up to it if you need to. You want to walk at a pace that is like you are late for a meeting. It should make you breathe through your mouth. Again, work up to that if you've not been exercising at all.

Eventually, you will have to pick up the pace to have the same workout.

At some point you can start to add in 2-3 weight lifting sessions, and some stretching.

It is important to pick/find something that you can find enjoyment in-- that's what helps people stick to a routine. Some people like group exercise, some people like to be alone. Try something new if you want.

One thing that will really help your body (and keep you from getting really bored) is to switch things up from time to time. I often recommend to people (I work at the YMCA) to use several different machines at several different speeds during the same workout. Instead of spending 30 min at one speed on the treadmill, do 5 min on the bike at a slow speed, 10 min on the treadmill at medium, 5 min on the elliptical at a high speed, then 5 min slow on the bike again... or whatever. mixing it up is great for your body. And "fast" or "slow" is relative for everyone.

Do you have any "special" needs-- like painful joints, etc? That would also affect what exercise routine you choose.

:thumbup:Hello Patrick I was banded on 2/17/10. I searched the net for the best routine or work out. I'm no expert but i did find out. That walking out side at a decent pace for a longer time is better. Than at a faster pace for a shorter time. I find that if i'm in a gym i don't want to be on a treadmill for more than 20 mins. I do 2.5 miles around the hood then about a half hour in the gym with light weight high reps. I'm on week 7 and i'm down 36 lbs. Again I'm no expert but this works for me good luck.

Jimmy

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
