Prescription pills and liquid diet

Recommended Posts

How do you deal with large prescription pills during pre and post op liquid diets, especially in post op. I take 5 prescriptions for diabetes and associated conditions and a couple of these are fairly large pills. Howdoes this work with such a small pouch post op?

Thanks

Hi Sotex,

I was banded at the end of July, 2009. I was sent home with a liquid pain killer, but still managed to take my other med's o.k. for quite a while. When I got about 6cc's in my band, I started having trouble with a couple of the larger ones. I bought a pill splitter at Walmart. One of them I cut in quarters and that works fine.

The other one is "timed release" and you can't cut those. It happens to be my blood pressure med. The doc took me off of my other 2 blood pressure meds and told me that if I still need this final one after I can no longer swallow it, he will find an alternative. Some people have to crush theirs, but I sure hope I don't have to do that because meds can really taste nasty!!:)

By the way, a friend of mine was on meds for blood pressure, cholesterol and diabetes. His doc has taken him off the diabetes meds and cholesterol meds and reduced his blood pressure meds.... He is 76 years old and was banded in Oct. 2009.

So, you may not have to worry too much longer about your meds either!!!

I too was sent home with liquid pain rx and one for nausea. My larger pills at home are capsules that I will not open and mix with pudding. They go down ok so far and there is a liquid alternative for the future when I get more restriction. My other pills are small and they are no problem. I am using a chewable multi vit and Calcium. My B12 is small too. I am only 23 days post op with 3cc in a 10cc band. The 3 cc was put in at time of surgery. When in doubt, check with your surgeons office or doctor that prescribed your rx and see what they say.

I am really worried about taking my meds as well. Most of my pills are very small but the vicodin pills are huge.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
