Hiatal Hernia

Recommended Posts

I have a question, I am suppose to get banded on the 29th of April, however I have a moderate hiatal hernia now when I first talked to the surgeon before my EDG I wasn't sure how large it was, but I now know it is moderate. I have no erosion or barretts so I am hoping that I can be banded, but my gut feeling is he is going to try and sell me on bypass. I will see my own gastro before hand so that I an know before hand what he thinks. My question to you is, is this a really big problem and do you know if there is any hope that someone may want to repair my hernia and give me a band. I am getting a little down and need some reassuring.

Thanks

My doctor found a hernia while he was placing my band. He stiched it up and said that it is not uncommon for them to have to repair hernias while putting in bands. I never knew I had one.

I had a hiatial hernia repaired during my lapband surgery.

I was told that about 33% of patients getting lapband have hernia repair too. It should not be a problem.

I also had a hiatal hernia repaired during my band surgery-- I also didn't know that I had it. My doctor routinely fixes any that he finds once he's in there.

My surgeon found mine while doing my EGD and plans to fix it when he puts in the band. He told me that many obese people have them, so I don't think that it will be a showstopper for you.

I also had a hiatal hernia repaired when I was banded that I did not even know I had.

Knowing you have one might be beneficial (if you are not covered by insurance) a friend had her bariatric surgeon agree to fix her hiatal hernia..(covered) and he agreed to put the band in at the same time ..charging her only about 1/2 the price because the hospital/ anesthesia etc was covered by the hernia repair.

Wish I'd known I had one........hmmm hindsight is always 20/20. I'm sure he'll just fix your hernia and band you up  good luck

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
