BobKat 0 Posted March 24, 2010 I have a question, I am suppose to get banded on the 29th of April, however I have a moderate hiatal hernia now when I first talked to the surgeon before my EDG I wasn't sure how large it was, but I now know it is moderate. I have no erosion or barretts so I am hoping that I can be banded, but my gut feeling is he is going to try and sell me on bypass. I will see my own gastro before hand so that I an know before hand what he thinks. My question to you is, is this a really big problem and do you know if there is any hope that someone may want to repair my hernia and give me a band. I am getting a little down and need some reassuring. Thanks
outside*looking*in 0 Posted March 24, 2010 My doctor found a hernia while he was placing my band. He stiched it up and said that it is not uncommon for them to have to repair hernias while putting in bands. I never knew I had one.
Humming Bird 275 Posted March 24, 2010 I had a hiatial hernia repaired during my lapband surgery. I was told that about 33% of patients getting lapband have hernia repair too. It should not be a problem.
jensmallwood 0 Posted March 24, 2010 I also had a hiatal hernia repaired during my band surgery-- I also didn't know that I had it. My doctor routinely fixes any that he finds once he's in there.
jalivia2 0 Posted March 24, 2010 My surgeon found mine while doing my EGD and plans to fix it when he puts in the band. He told me that many obese people have them, so I don't think that it will be a showstopper for you.
Debster21 0 Posted March 24, 2010 I also had a hiatal hernia repaired when I was banded that I did not even know I had. Knowing you have one might be beneficial (if you are not covered by insurance) a friend had her bariatric surgeon agree to fix her hiatal hernia..(covered) and he agreed to put the band in at the same time ..charging her only about 1/2 the price because the hospital/ anesthesia etc was covered by the hernia repair. Wish I'd known I had one........hmmm hindsight is always 20/20. I'm sure he'll just fix your hernia and band you up  good luck
