when did you start exercising?

Recommended Posts

I am 3 weeks out and still sore at the port site but want to start exercising . I go back to my strenuous nursing job on Friday and that will be some help. How soon did you start exercising and what did you start doing?

p.s. I try to look through archives before posting but couldn't find anything relevant.:o

I was walking the track at the Y at 7 days out to finish getting the gas out. After my 10 day follow-up with the doctor my husband asked him if I could get back on the elliptical (I love that thing) and he said heck yeah. I think it promoted healing though I didn't over do it. I am 11 weeks out (1/8/10) and bust a sweat regularly.

p.s. walking is going to do wonders for the port pain area. It will fade away. My scar is already fading.

I started taking short walks with my dog about 5 days out from surgery... but didn't start wearing my pedometer and going for big steps (10,000) until my 2 week post-op appointment. I was cleared to exercise, and so far have been walking, lifting weights(gradually building) and some pilates. I plan to start more strenuous aerobic exercise this week at the gym (3 1/2 weeks out).

I started walking about a week after surgery. I was able to start on the elliptical at 4 weeks. I started the C25k program (walking/jogging) at 7 weeks. (could have started at 6 weeks) I bought a compression shirt to wear when doing strenuous exercise. It keeps my port from aching.

Good luck! My advice is not to rush it. If you are walking and your port feels sore, slow down a bit. You shouldn't stop, but slow down the pace for a while. The first day I went back I set my treadmill to 3.5 and away I went... for about 5 mins before my entire stomach hurt! I walked at around 2.8-3 mph for the first couple weeks. Then worked up to the first half hour at 3.5 and the last half hour at 2.8 - 3 to let it rest.

some patients wait up to 6 weeks, i started at 4 weeks....i really wanted to start losing more weight and so i headed quickly to the gym. started with some weight lifting and some cardio - at slow pace - but little by little i've been getting better at it plus the weight loss has been wonderful.

Compression shirt! I love that idea, I didn't even know they existed. I have to hold my port site when I sneeze (I sneeze a lot) to keep it from hurting.

Thanks for the input.

I had surgery on December 17, 2009 and started walking about 45 minutes straight a day about 2 weeks after surgery. However, I just started working w/ a trainer three weeks ago and started to do some ab work.

Best,

Lauren

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
